02 Jun 2016
Third Language A third language in the world of a business oriented society – During an era, in which industry is growing and expanding nonstop, in the professional world manpower is seen as an important part of every organization and employers particularly wish to get employees with good language skills. In the past, besides Thai, which we use in communication, we have also always been taught that English is an important second language for work.

Third Language Languages used at work in the age of the current working society – In the flow of the opening of the economic community, with the fluidity of work force and the upheavals of trends in business, the industrial sectors have started changes and a demand for manpower with skills in a third language has risen. This involves the government sector, which has to be the center of support for the sectors of production, tourism and communication on ASEAN level – so you can say that it is the golden age of third language. That is why the sectors of sales and customer service and professionals with third language skills are strong positions of this year. This includes telephone service staff, tour guides, sales staff, business development staff, translators, interpreters, customer service staff, engineers, HR staff, accountants and others. And so ManpowerGroup has investigated the actual needs of companies under the care of ManpowerGroup all over Thailand to get to know the needs for manpower with a third language from 2015 until today and we found the following:

Chinese strongly ranks number 1You can see it in the amount of Chinese tourists who pour into Thailand. More than 8 millions come each year constituting a ratio, which is almost as high as 30% of the total number of foreign tourists. That is why the tourism and service industries, which include industry groups like hotels, restaurants, interpreters, hospitals and tour guides see a strong need for workforce with Chinese communication skills.

Japanese ranks number 2 Because of the firm trust in investment and the establishment of production bases originating from Japan, particularly in industrial estates, there is still a steady and continuousdemand for workforce with Japanese language skills, particularly on manager and professional level. Individuals with Japanese language skills on a higher level have a high degree of competitiveness.

Spanish ranks number 3 Business and investment in Thailand continue to come from Europe and America and most people who can communicate in Spanish also have good standards of English.French ranks number 4This is seen as a favorite language among students and it is still demanded on the market as before in communication for businesses, interpretation and the hotel industry.

But what is interesting isthat Korean has risen to rank number 5. It is said that it is highly demanded in the business sector, as in the tourism and service sector, where more Korean speakers are needed to respond to data about Korean tourists: More than one million come every year – and it is estimated that the number will continuously increase.

Third Language The market need needs to come along with higher rewards. It can be said that there is still not much manpower with linguistic skills in the mentioned groups and so wages will be higher than normal, basic wages by about 5,000 – 20,000 Baht depending on each individual's expertise. ManpowerGroup has collected statistical data from 2014 to 2015 and seen a growth of over 15 percent in the demand and in 2016the first trimester alone has seen an explosive rise in the demand for manpower with language skills.

Third Languages will see a higher demand in the future.

All sectors have to progress and support the development of language skills among manpower seriously. This applies to the government sector, the education sector, the basic development of Thai workforce and the private sector. It is not exclusively about arts and languages but there must be specific branches such as engineering, medicine and accounting with a third language so that there is professionalmanpower and work with foreign entities can be done seamlessly. The future of personnel with potential, the demand on the manpower market, which is ready for development in working units and organizations in the country will create economic capital and this will have an impact on the development of the country on the long-term.
