Bangkok--7 Mar--Bangkok Synthetics

Bangkok Synthetics Co., Ltd. and JSR Corporation have signed a Letter of Intent to establish a Joint-venture (with 49% by BST and 51% by JSR) and to build a first S-SBR Plant (Solution Polymerization Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) in Map Ta Phut, Thailand. The capacity of the new plant will be 50,000 to 100,000 tons per year, and is scheduled to start operation in June 2013.

Mr. Chaiyot Wongphyat - Managing Director, Bangkok Synthetics Co., Ltd. Said “The Joint-venture will be operated by both companies using each of their strengths. JSR will provide the technology license of the high performance S-SBR to the Joint-venture and BST will supply a crucial raw material. Both contributions create synergy and will enhance the capability of the joint venture company.”

S-SBR is a highly-functional synthetic rubber used mainly in tires and industrial applications. Due to the recent rise in environmental concerns as well as labeling regulations of fuel-efficient tires, global demands of S-SBR have surged and will continue to increase in the coming years. At present, JSR’s S-SBR developed by proprietary polymer technologies is highly acclaimed globally as most suitable for fuel-efficient high performance tires. Fuel-efficient tires require conflicting properties of low rolling resistance and high wet gripping power and JSR’s S-SBR achieves both without negative impact on the tire performance.

BST, established in 1991 as a pioneer in the C4 business in Thailand, is one of the region’s largest manufacturers of a variety of Mixed C4 products. BST is building and strengthening the value chain from upstream to downstream in C4 based businesses with highly flexible factory design and efficient operations based on revolutionary technology. BST’s current products include Butadiene Monomer, Butene-1, MTBE, C4-Raffinate and by-product-LPG. BST previously also invested in rubber production facilities for Emulsion Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (E-SBR) and Polybutadiene Rubber (BR), and is one of the largest synthetic rubber producers in South East Asia. In addition to the S-SBR Project, BST is currently developing an NB Latex Business, mainly for medical glove application, and building a Commercial NB Latex Plant which is expected to be on stream in 2012. The collaboration with the world S-SBR leader, JSR, will further enhance the variety of BST’s rubber products to meet the fas t moving domestic and export demand.
