A constellation of policy-makers, finance experts, civil society leaders, climate change specialists, private sector entrepreneurs and agriculture innovators from across Asia and the Pacific will gather in Denpasar, Indonesia, on Tuesday and Wednesday, for a meeting on ways in which the region can best address the food, energy and financial crises in the context of climate change.
The High-level Regional Policy Dialogue on “The Food-Fuel Crisis and Climate Change – Reshaping the Development Agenda” is jointly organized by the Government of Indonesia and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). The event will be held on 9 and 10 December, and it is the first time that the issues of the food, energy and financial crises, and climate change, will be addressed in a comprehensive and integrated manner in the Asia-Pacific region.
The event’s keynote address, by the President of Indonesia, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will be delivered by Indonesia ’s Coordinating Minister of People’s Welfare, Mr. Aburizal Bakri.
Participants from two dozen countries across the region are expected to attend. They include Indonesia’s Foreign and Agriculture Ministers, Dr. N. Hassan Wirajuda and Mr. Anton Apriyantono; Malaysia’s Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Mr. Rohani Andul Karim; Kiribati’s Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Terieta Mwemwenikeaki; Mr. Hudson Kauhiona, the Principal Climate Change Officer of the Solomon Islands’ Ministry of Conservation; Mr. Pirthiman Pradhan, the Managing Director/Chairman of the Seed and Agricultural Input Sector Programme, part of Bhutan’s Ministry of Agriculture; and Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP.
Specific topics that will be discussed include the global financial crisis and its implications for Asia and the Pacific, food security through sustainable agriculture, energy security for sustainable development and the perspectives from small island states.
The meeting is expected to result in an outcome document which will include regional recommendations and actionable initiatives for addressing food, energy and financial security in the context of climate change. The outcome document will feed into the ministerial discussions scheduled to be held during ESCAP’s 65 th Commission Session in April, 2009.
