BUILD IT BIGGER 5 EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS Rebuilding New York City’s Subway Host Danny Forster takes us to New York City, where the largest public works project in the country is happening. The project is a USD$15 billion expansion of the NYC transit system, one of the largest in the world, where crews are blasting underneath the world’s busiest train station and tunneling directly beneath the busy city streets. Danny heads 150 feet underground to find out what can be done without shutting down the city above. London’s Olympic Aquatic Stadium As the crown jewel of the 2012 Olympic Park, the London Aquatics Centre will host 44 swimming and diving events under a 118,000-square-foot undulating steel roof. Danny Forster goes behind the scenes as crews race to construct the massive curving ceiling, three state-of-the-art Olympic pools, and seating for 17,500 spectators in one of the most advanced swimming facilities ever built. But the most impressive innovation is that after the Games are over this building will physically transform to become a lasting legacy for London. Constructing Serbia’s Longest Bridge Serbia is reinventing its image. After years of war, international isolation, and crumbling infrastructure, Serbia’s capital Belgrade has invested half a billion dollars in an infrastructure overhaul that includes a new national icon: the Sava River Bridge. It will be the world’s largest single-pylon cable-stayed bridge and will vastly improve a critical freight corridor connecting industrial central Europe to the East. But a single misstep could drag the whole project – and potentially the national dreams of Serbia – into the river. Danny Forster joins crews as they take the Sava River Bridge to new heights. Azerbaijan’s Amazing Transformation Located along the Caspian Sea above Iran, Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan and its largest city. The financial centre for the old Soviet Empire, this 1,500-year old city once produced half of the world's oil supply. Almost 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan is now emerging from the shadows of Russian rule. Backed by oil reserves worth nearly half a trillion dollars, Baku is attempting to reinvent the country's reputation by rebuilding the entire city! Drought-Proofing Australia Australia is running out of water. For the past 12 years, a record-breaking drought has bleached once-productive farmland and prompted cities and towns to ban all nonessential water use. The ground zero of the drought is Melbourne, a booming city of four million. Skyrocketing growth mixed with 20% lower rainfall has emptied reservoirs. Scientists predict average rainfall could drop by another 20% in the next 50 years, making Melbourne’s 300 million gallon-a-day water requirement a threat to its survival. Faced with the grim possibility that the drought may neverend, the city is turning to the island continent’s only unlimited water source – the ocean. Amsterdam’s Futuristic Floating City The Netherlands is running out of land. Nearly one quarter of their land and 60 percent of their population lies beneath sea level. Experts at fending off floodwaters, the Dutch have built more than 10,000 miles of dikes, dams, and floodgates. As climate change brings more frequent floods, engineers are radically changing their battle strategy. Rather than fight back the sea, they are making it an ally, using it to create real estate where none exists. Building Mumbai’s Modern Airport In BUILD IT BIGGER’s first trip to India, Danny Forster joins crews as they attempt to overhaul Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai without canceling a single flight. If they succeed, the new airport will revolutionize airport design and change the face of India forever. Turkey’s Mammoth Hydropowered Deriner Dam In rugged Northeast Turkey, Danny Forster joins crews as they build the Deriner Dam, one of the tallest and strongest dams ever constructed, designed to hold back 500 billion gallons of water.
