Maiden flight officiated by Thai and Laotian Ambassadors to Singapore
Tiger Airways, Singapore’s low fare airline, launched the first scheduled international flights to Udon Thani, its latest destination, today with flight TR162 from Singapore. Udon Thani which also serves as a gateway to Vientiane Laos is Tiger Airways’ sixth destination in Thailand; the others being Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Krabi and Phuket.
Tiger Airlines operates 122 flights a week between Thailand and Singapore, making it the biggest international low fare airline to serve Thailand. Tiger Airways is the only airline to operate scheduled direct flights between Singapore and Udon Thani.
Officiating on the inaugural flight were the Thai Ambassador to Singapore, His Excellency Chalermpol Thanchitt and the Laotian Ambassador to Singapore, His Excellency Done Somvorachit. The two ambassadors were escorted by Tiger Airways CEO Tony Davis from Singapore to Udon Thani on TR162..
Also on this flight were five members of the Singapore media as well as 13 members of the travel trade on an educational tour jointly hosted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Tiger Airways. All 120 passengers on-board the inaugural flight were welcomed upon arrival at Udon Thani International Airport by VIPS and members of the Thai and Vientiane media.
At the press briefing at Udon Thai, Tiger Airways reiterated its commitment to Thailand by continuing to offer low fare flights between Singapore and Thailand so that more passengers could enjoy affordable travel between the two countries.
“Tiger Airways is delighted to be the first international carrier to operate at the new Udon Thani Internaional Airport. It is a great honour to be the first international carrier to serve Udon Thani and the people in Northeastern Thailand as well as providing greater access to Vientiane and Laos. The establishment of this flight service is a reflection of the strong commitment of the local government to support the growth of the tourism industry and bring greater prosperity to the populace in the region. We feel privileged to have such strong partners in this program and Tiger Airways is committed to the long term success of this route,” said Tiger Airways CEO, Tony Davis.
Davis said, “Thailand has always been special to Tiger Airways as it was the first country we flew to and it has become a central part of our growing network. In 2004 Tiger Airways operated flights to three cities in Thailand and today we have doubled this to six, with the latest addition of Udon Thani. Thailand accounts for the largest component of Tiger Airways operations and our network covers the entire country from the capital Bangkok (three flights each day), to Hat Yai in the South, the Andaman Sea resort destinations of Phuket and Krabi, as well as Chiang Mai in the North, and now Udon Thani in the North East.”
He said Tiger Airways has played an important role in developing tourism and trade opportunities across Asia by providing travelers with affordable low fares for travel. Tiger Airways has the distinction of being the only Singapore based airline offering direct flights to three of its six destinations in Thailand. By working closely with Tourism Authority of Thailand and other stakeholders in the tourism industry like hotels and tour operators, Tiger Airways has contributed to the development of tourism and travel in Thailand. The latest destination of Udon Thani will also provide new tourism and trade opportunities between Singapore and Laos as Udon Thani is a convenient gateway to Vientiane (about an hour drive away).
