UK GOVERNMENT AND MICROSOFT JOIN UP TO STOP CHILD SEX ABUSE

54 police officers, lawyers, judges and NGO workers from throughout Asia will receive training in Bangkok from 26 March to 6 April from UK experts on tackling the sexual exploitation and abuse of children through the internet. This regional workshop, a unique collaboration between the UK Government and Microsoft Corporation, is part of an ongoing commitment by the UK Government to work with a wide range of partners to combat child sex abuse throughout the world. The British Ambassadors to Thailand and Cambodia, whose Embassies have jointly organised the workshop, said “We are delighted that Microsoft have once again joined forces with the UK Government to combat child sex abuse through the internet. This is another excellent example of how different partners can work together. We look forward to sharing our expertise and learning from our counterparts in the region”. The two-week workshop will instruct participants about the techniques used by paedophiles to target victims through the internet, and offer practical advice on how to combat this. The workshop will also broaden international co-operation, and aid capacity building and information sharing within and between the countries of the region. The workshop will be hosted by the US and Thai funded International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). The training has been designed and will be delivered by experts from the UK’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre in partnership with associate members of The Virtual Global Task Force (VGT). The VGT is an international alliance of law enforcement agencies from Australia, Canada, the UK and the US, working to protect children from sexual exploitation. Participants from the three key sectors of law enforcement, the judiciary and civil society from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, India, Indonesia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam have been invited to attend. The training will take place from 26 March to 6 April 2007 at the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in Bangkok.
