Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited today announced its cooperation with the Thai Robotics Society and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Engineering in organizing the Robocup Thailand Championship 2006. The contest, sponsored by Seagate Technology for the fourth consecutive year, will select the best team to represent Thailand in the World Robocup 2006 to be held in Germany. “Through the Robocup Thailand Championship 2006, aspiring Thai engineering students in the diploma and degree courses will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in building these complex computer-programmed robots,” associate professor Dr. Prabhas Chongstitvatana, president of the Thai Robotics Society (TRS) said, “Thailand has successfully participated in the World Robocup 2003 in Italy, World Robocup 2004 in Portugal and the recent World Robocup 2005 in Osaka, Japan, and we are confident that this experience will help the Thai team make it to the final round of the World Robocup 2006.” In the Robocup Thailand Championship, contestants will be required to build one robot that must successfully maneuver around barriers and kick a football into the goal post within five minutes of the contest. The top eight teams with the highest scores will each produce five small robots to take part in soccer matches against one another. The team that scores the most goals in a 20-minute match will represent Thailand in the World Robocup 2006. “Seagate’s sponsorship of the Robocup Thailand Championship for four consecutive years underlines its commitment to encouraging student engineers,” Mrs. Supar Phokachaipat, senior director of Corporate Communications, Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited said, “Our goal is to help the next generation of young innovators get excited about the wonders of engineering and technology so that they can lead the way in building a knowledge-based economy in Thailand.” As the main sponsor of this competition, Seagate provides four awards to the winning teams. The winning team will receive the cash prize of 200,000 baht and will also represent Thailand at the World Robocup 2006 in Germany. The second winning team will receive a cash prize of 50,000 baht. The team that wins the “Best Technique Award” (an award for the team that showcases the best application of the robotics technology) will receive a cash prize of 30,000 baht. The remaining teams that make up the eight finalists will receive cash prize of 20,000 baht per team. Thai nationals studying in the diploma, the bachelors’ degree or higher levels are eligible to apply. Each team should consist of three members and one advisor.
