Little known to first-time visitors is a culture born from centuries of sustenance living, where life is as simple as the balance between fish and taro. The rare beauty of Palau exists in the hearts of the locals. Following a hundred years of foreign administration, the Palauans obtained their independence as an island nation through the signing of the Compact of Free Association on October 1, 1994. Although swift to adopt modern democracy and technology, the Palauans have retained a unique and complex social structure. Skills once used for daily survival are still practiced and dances reveal stories and legends of long ago. Invisible to most tourists, these customs are essential to Palau s daily living, The fortunate adventurer may observe Palauan customs through the First Child Ceremony, the most interesting of Palau s customs. But on October 24th, 25th, 26th, the second annual Olechotel Belau Fair will showcase Palau through a vibrant display of flora, fauna, culinary art, arts & crafts, fashion, and traditional sports & games. The fair kicks off with a parade on October 24th, with floats characterizing a unique historical of yesterday, today and tomorrow of Palau. From there, activities will be running consecutively from different locations in Koror. If your interest is in the culinary aspects of Palauan culture, you will be interested in the Food Tasting and Display Sales, or the freshly BBQ d fish caught in the Spear Fishing Contest. There will also be a Flora & Fauna Display. Traditional games, such as Fish or Tapioca Wrapping, Coconut Husking & Grinding, or Basket Weaving Contests, Spear-throwing, Wild & Rooster Cockfights and Palauan kite-flying will take place. Have you ever placed coconuts in a basket, balanced it on your head, and walked as fast as you can? This event is not to be missed. If your interest is Performing or Displayed Arts, featured events will be a Fashion Show, Poetry Recital, Traditional Chants & Dance Performances, and art displays from children s art to professionally made storyboards, paintings, and other crafts. As disability is a “life process” that crosses all boundaries of age and abilities, several activities will be geared toward children and adults with special needs. The meaning of the theme, “Elii, Elechang, Klukuk” refers to the Evolution of Palauan Art and Culture, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. The customs and traditions that have bound Palauans together over the centuries and the enhancement of the Palauan culture taking place today will shape the future for all.
