Living with 5,000 live poisonous scorpions for 33 days and 33 nights At Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum, Pattaya City
Today, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum managed by Minor International PCL in collaboration with The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s 3rd Region and Pattaya City has a thing to celebrate when Scorpion Queen – Ms. Kanchana Ketkaew or Nong Na successfully set her newest Guinness World Record of longest stay with 5,000 live scorpions consecutively for 33 days and 33 nights. Earlier in December 2008, she was successful setting the newest Guinness World Record holding a 7-inch live scorpion in her mouth for 2 minutes 3 seconds prior to setting foot into the glass enclosure for her record attempt, 33days/nights, which has now become the second world record for this girl from Samui Island, Surat Thani, Thailand. Having set these 2 stupendous successful records makes it very challenging for any contender in the future.
Moment of Truth, Moment of Victory!
This successful attempt is being watched worldwide and is certainly the greatest record of her life – Ms. Kanchana Ketkaew revealed with tears of joy, “I am proud and so overwhelmed to be able to acquire the victory of living with 5,000 scorpions for 33 days and 33 nights, spanning the New Year! I am delighted with my first achievement, holding a huge 7-inch live scorpion in my mouth for 2 minutes 3 seconds.” Added, “However, this 2nd achievement really means even more to me as it breaks my own world record set in year 2002. To endure these past 33 days and nights has been very challenging mentally and emotionally for me. However, I set my priority, focus and my determination straight on the goal starting the moment I had set foot in that glass room. In so doing, I have had tremendous support from visitors who came by to visit me, to encourage me which has given me confidence to complete myquest. Each and everyday, I woke up with 5,000 live scorpions; it is not piece of cake, my trick was I concentrated all the time to control my own worry and fear to make sure that I would live through the set period of the challenge.” With Kanchana’s personal determination to tap into an occupation with no-woman performers before, she has become the first female performer with venomous animals, she shared her feelings that it is dreadful for her to even think about slightest chance of being unable to succeed, “I never want to disappoint myself and all well-wishers and wonderful supporters. This Guinness World Record is not only a key to make myself known for what I can do, but also to put Thailand on the map and make it more popular. Hopefully, this will bring Thailand more visitors and income.”
As for all the accomplices, the 5,000 scorpions that spent 33 days and nights with the Scorpion Queen, they are known as Elephant scorpions, acquired from the wild on Samui Island; they have flexed their stinging power presenting the Scorpion Queen with 13 stings. Kanchana said that with her over 10 years experiences, her immune system has created certain level of tolerance of scorpion sting therefore she could endure the pain and not display allergic symptoms though poisonous. “I am always ready to defend my records at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum, Pattaya. I do not recommend that anyone attempt to perform these feats unless they are professional because these animals are dangerous and should be treated with caution.”
