ManpowerGroup Thailand highlights current and future high demands in the service and retail labor market in preparation for the launching of the ASEAN Economic Community, or the AEC. Current labor ratios are divided into the operational level (60%), management level (30%) and high-ranking executive level (10%). The current operational level has high market demands, especially in service, retail sales, insurance and administration groups with future growth in the aforementioned labor group and demand for labor with specific skills in language, expertise, experience and changing ratio numbers. The management level will be in greater market demand in support of foreign capital groups investing in the country with a projected growth rate of over 30% from the current demand.

“The Thai labor market continues to have numerous gaps with changes only in the values of students graduating with bachelor’s degrees and seeking good jobs with more options and remuneration, especially in the service and retail labor groups which remain in demand and are expected to have higher ratios in the future. The aforementioned labor group will definitely grow in support of the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community, or the AEC.”

“Service and retail business group laborers have rather high trends in movement with trade and investment, especially executives from the intermediate level and up, which may result in a shortage for this labor group in the near future as evident in the upward trends for goods and services coming from abroad in line with popular demand. This year has seen twice as much investment in foreign products and services in comparison to the previous year whether in terms of health and beauty products, fashion products, processed food products and technological products from Korea, Japan, China and the United States. If the AEC is launched in 2015, service labor will be in greater demand, especially at the management level, which will enable products and services with capacity for consumer demand requiring competent personnel. Therefore, the skills, knowledge and experience of personnel in this group are very important and will be in demand by future markets.” said, Miss Suthida Kanjanakantikul, Marketing Manager, ManpowerGroup Thailand

Miss Suthida further added, “Service and retail labor opportunities will enjoy a high degree of expansion. Therefore, my feeling is that the public and private sectors should give importance to all sectors of the service and retail labor groups, specific areas of expertise and the advantages of Thai service workers who will be in future demand by the business sector while further increasing the number of personnel to support future market demands. I think the market for this group will expand by no less than 30% because existing businesses will have to increase storefronts and the number of employees at all levels to improve business efficiency. New businesses are also preparing to open and enter the domestic market. With this heightened competition, these business groups will also require effective employees as we have seen in the direct sales group with its doubled rates leading to mounting competition among entrepreneurs and increasing the demand for call center employees and classification of the capacity of employees answering phones, employees who can provide information and employees who can communicate in English. Operational level employees continue to have high turnovers. However, management and executive level employees will have very low turnovers with greater market demand and possible international labor transfers. Therefore, the number of employees in this group should be protected or increased to support future market growth.”

Miss Suthida Kanjanakantikul added, “Future labor trends in Thailand will see a shift in direction due to changing consumer behaviors as evident in the increasing role of technology. More labor groups with IT skills will work in organizations with technological demands. This labor group will have low turnover, high progress and high wages. In the future, insurance businesses in Thailand will have insurance buyer seeking reliability and awareness of details. Telesales ratios will be decreased while B to B sales will increase”.

“The future direction of the service and retail labor market is obviously changing. Knowledge and ability are growing in importance and more foreign businesses or organizations are coming to Thailand. At present, the aforementioned labor group can be divided by educational qualifications from Grade 9 and vocational levels up to the bachelor’s degree or master’s degree levels. Job difficulties can also be classified by the skills and expertise of each person, e.g. language and other specific skills. In 2012, the unemployment rate amounted to over 1.13 hundred thousand people. Hence, if these new graduates have education and understanding of this work with good attitudes towards the service sector, graduates will find this field to offer good opportunities. With academic support from the state and the educational sectors, we are confident that unemployment problems will decrease.”

“Today, the ManpowerGroup cooperates with a number of service business allies with over ten thousand jobs at all levels capable of meeting the demands of persons interested in service work in the hope of contributing to the minimization of unemployment issues in Thailand,” Miss Suthida concluded.
