Asian Oasis Receives Prestigious Diversey Special Recognition Award at the 2012 SKAL World Congress

Asian Oasis’s Lisu and Lanjia Lodges were honored at the Skal “Sustainable Development in Tourism” Awards held at the Songdo Conevensia, at a lunch hosted by the Mayor of Incheon, Korea. The awards were announced by the Vice President of Skal International, Karine Coulanges, and President of SKAL Thailand, Andrew J Wood, during the the 73rd Skal World Congress.

The Diversey Special Recognition Award shares its aim with the “Sustainable Development in Tourism Awards” (SDIT), presented by Skal International. They are designed to acknowledge projects which are innovative and designed to transform the conventional understanding of sustainability to the idea of an "integrated bottom line" where business and the environment, along with safety, risk management, and corporate responsibility are efficiently and cooperatively managed.

Asian Oasis’s Lisu and Lanjia Lodges are properties that have gone beyond protecting local cultures and preserving the environment. Moreover, they have done so while also developing their business into a sustainable enterprise.

What are the criteria for winning the award?

Winning projects successfully combine multiple elements of sustainability (People / Profit / Evironment), and inspire new and innovative ways of creating sustainability that may include alternative, and even “out of the box” approaches.

Skal, the world’s largest organization of travel and tourism professionals, has presented Ecotourism Awards each year since 2002. The initial awards program was launched following the United Nations declaring 2002 the Year of Ecotourism and the Mountains. The awards recognize those responsible for the best practices around the world in the areas of ecotourism and environmental responsibility. As awareness grew of the broader strategic value of “sustainability,” Skal consulted with Diversey to expand the program.

Asian Oasis owns and operates Lisu Lodge and Lanjia Lodge. Lisu Lodge was founded in 2007, and Lanjia Lodge opened its doors in 2009.

Lisu Lodge is situated in a small Lisu tribal village 50 kilometres from Chiang Mai City, Thailand. It stands proudly on its success as a truly integrated culturally and environmentally conscious development. Built in traditional Lisu style with an eye for western comforts, the lodge overlooks the lush fields and hills of the surrounding valley and serves as a base-camp for a magical blend of adventure, relaxation and insight. Lisu Lodge was created to provide meaningful experiences for visitors while staying firmly focused on community development, environmental balance, cultural learning, nature discovery and adventure.

Lanjia Lodge is an eco-friendly, community-based lodge nestled on a hill overlooking the Mekong River and Laos, two hours outside of Chiang Rai, Thailand. Lanjia, which means 'peaceful' in Hmong language, delivers a total experience. Local Hmong and Lahu villagers participate in all aspects of delivering this unique experience which is sure to leave the traveler with a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, these communities.
