Mentor International, a leading overseas educational consultancy in Thailand, in collaboration with HSBC organised a special seminar for High School students who want to study GCSE, A level and the IB (International Baccalaureate) in the UK. The theme was ‘Learn about the education system, living at school in the UK and the opportunities available’. The event was held at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel on Saturday 20 August 2011.
Mr Ian Bushell, Director of Mentor International, opened the seminar with a warm welcoming speech. This was followed by a presentation by Khun Lanchana Thitiluck who is Mentor International’s Boarding School Manager. Ms Thitiluck shared her expertise with parents and students and a lively Q and A session followed.
As HSBC and Mentor International have had a long term collaboration promoting financial planning for overseas education, HSBC Premier, Ms Chanchai Chanchaochai, Vice President HSBC Premier Relationship Development Team Head from HSBC also advised on “Planning your finances for your child's overseas education”.
After that, Dr. Kulnara Ubolcholaket, Managing Director of AGEG Academic Afterschool, gave the opportunity to all parents and students to explore some examples of written tests. This information helps students prepare for their actual placement tests and helps them choose a school which is most suitable for them. There was also a ‘mock’ telephone interview conducted by Mrs Pippa Watt who gave one student the opportunity to practice answering the kind of questions that UK schools would ask in a proper interview or a Skype interview.
Ms. Jane Elliott, Market Development Manager of Southeast Asia Cambridge Education Group, gave a very interesting and informative talk about the ‘Pathway to the Top Universities’, giving guidance on how to plan your education pathway to get to top universities in the UK.
Last but not least, there was an alumni talk to families. Two former students from UK British Boarding Schools, Mr. Pittawas Tulathummatorn from Ellesmere College and Ms. Pornsupa Shootwit, from d’Overbroeck's College gave us some valuable insights into their lives at UK schools. These two successful alumni spoke about their experiences, and addition to useful information, they also had some humorous stories to tell and the seminar ended with laughter and smiles.
