As part of its annual "Take Your Community to Work Day", United Airlines, on September 27, took 15 students and five teachers from Kururatrangsarit school in Ratburi province to Suvarnabhumi airport to find out about aviation and why it's such an exciting career choice. The students, aged 12-16, experienced check-in and inspected the cockpit of the Boeing 747 where flight crew explained the different instrumentation. The children met the captain who answered questions and handed out gifts.
The pupils were then escorted by United's engineering, flight attendant, ground handling and marketing staff who showed the pupils four passenger seating areas: United First Suite, United Business, United Economy Plus, and United Economy. The students inspected the cooking area and downstairs in the 747, where passengers normally cannot go.
Later the pupils gathered in the United staff meeting room for breakfast. United's staff then explained that United flies to over 210 destinations and was the first airline to introduce flight attendants. An aviation question and answer session followed.
"Each year we bring children from upcountry schools to the airport to share with them the excitement of the aviation sector," said United's general manager for Thailand, Mr Eric Wilson. "We hope that many of them will take a long-term interest in aviation and maybe one day work for United."
For the last seven years United Airlines has organized "Take Your Community to Work Day" for local school children in Thailand. "The objective is to give back to the community," said Mr Wilson. "This year was special because it is only the first anniversary of Suvarnabhumi being open. Many of the children hadn't been here before and wouldn't normally get the chance to visit a big airport, let alone see behind the scenes of a major airline."
