AMD RELEASE OPEN STANDARD DTX GUIDELINES TO ENABLE INDUSTRY-WIDE DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL FORM FACTOR PCs

Bangkok--27 Feb--PC & Associates Consulting

Specifications Intended to Help Drive Innovation and Deliver Smaller, Quieter, Desktop-Friendly PCs WHAT: AMD has released a review copy of proposed industry guidelines for DTX, an open standard specification initiated by AMD to enable the broad development of small form factor (SFF) PCs. With the release of these guidelines, AMD encourages OEMs, ODMs, component vendors and other industry stakeholders to contribute to the guidelines. The general DTX specifications define a minimum set of parameters necessary for interoperability. These parameters aim to give vendors the freedom to innovate on desktop solutions, leveraging production efficiencies that are available with the DTX open standard specification. WHY: AMD believes continued growth in the small form factor market can be accelerated with a mechanical interoperability standard. The DTX open standard specification is being designed to empower OEMs, ODMs, and component vendors to deliver innovative solutions that are smaller, quieter, and desktop-friendly, while leveraging commonalities within the ecosystem to benefit both customers and end users. This standard will take advantage of the existing ATX infrastructure and benefits including cost efficiency, system options and backward-compatibility, to allow for ground-breaking PC designs. HOW: A review copy of the industry guidelines for DTX is now being distributed via email to the ecosystem and also available on the web at www.DTXPC.org WHO BENEFITS: Enterprises can benefit from innovative designs that lower energy bills, helping to reduce overall operating costs, as well as sleeker systems that take up less space in offices and cubicles, and are designed to operate quietly. Moreover, small form factors based on the DTX open standard specifications will help enable differentiated and competitive solutions, and thus choices for enterprises. For consumers, the electricity cost savings benefit, while important, may be secondary to the innovative new designs for small form factor PCs, which AMD believes are better suited to non-traditional locations in the home. The flexibility of the DTX open standard specification will help enable an array of small form factor designs welcomed anywhere, whether it is the kitchen, living room, or home office. The size and noise output of these smaller designs should be less intrusive than traditional PCs and designed to encourage more multi-PC households. When linked with the other PCs and devices, these small form factor PCs can help provide more convenient access and management of content for every end user in the home. OEMs will be able to enjoy the inherent cost benefits of standardization. With the DTX open standard specification, the potential exists for the small form factor market to reap benefits similar to what the ATX standard has done for the desktop market in recent years.
