eBay creates economic opportunity for individuals and businesses in Thailand to Sell to the World reaching out to millions of eBay users worldwide

eBay, the leading global online marketplace, recently confirmed a 26% increase in registered users worldwide, from 168 million at the end of the company’s third quarter in 2005 to 212 million in the same quarter this year. “With millions of users worldwide, eBay provides boundless opportunity for Thai individuals and companies to buy from and sell to the world,” said Sam McDonagh, Director for eBay Southeast Asia. “From Jewelry, Clothing and Accessories to Handicraft – which Thailand is well-known for; eBay is an online marketplace where practically anyone can sell practically anything.” Since 1995, eBay has pioneered communities around the world built on commerce, sustained by trust and inspired by opportunity. eBay’s gross merchandise volume (GMV), the total value of all items sold on eBay’s trading platforms, reached US$12.6 billion as of the end of Q3 06, a 31% increase year over year. There are over 89 million items listed on eBay at any given time in more than 50,000 categories, with 6 million new items added every day. McDonagh highlighted that the company’s success lies in access to a global marketplace and unparalleled trust & safety. “Based on user feedback around the world, we know that Trust is a big issue when trading on the Internet,” he said. “eBay takes Trust and Safety very seriously. Members of the eBay community build trust through personal communication and a comprehensive feedback system. Every member can leave feedback and a short comment after each transaction to build a member’s reputation over time. This is a powerful incentive for both buyers and sellers to do the right thing,” he said. In addition to the feedback system, eBay’s verified rights owner program (VeRO) helps to ensure item listings do not infringe upon the copyright, trademark or other intellectual property rights of 3rd parties. eBay also has more than 2,000 employees contributing to marketplace safety and proactively works with law enforcement and government agencies throughout the world to enforce its policies. In Thailand, eBay goes back a decade – The first eBay user from Thailand registered in 1996. Thai sellers are among eBay’s most active, focused largely on exporting to buyers worldwide. The top categories that Thai sellers trade on eBay are clothing & accessories; jewelry, gems & watches; and sporting goods. On any given day, a Thai eBay member sells an item of jewelry or a watch every 27 seconds and an article of clothing every 56 seconds to buyers all over the world. Earlier this year, eBay began a series of activities to strengthen its community of registered users in Thailand. eBay conducted Seller Summits in Bangkok in April and in Chiang Mai in September to help Thai sellers achieve even greater sales. In July, eBay made available a Thai-language promotional site – www.eBay.co.th . The site provides a window to eBay’s global online marketplace where users can register and start buying and selling globally. Besides offering guides on how to export globally; this promotional site also provides information on eBay classes in Thailand. Most recently, eBay introduced a Thai-language version of its Seller Starter Kit that provides step-by-step instructions on how to sell on eBay. “To be successful, it is important that Thai sellers understand how eBay works and the best techniques for getting good results. We encourage those interested in eBay to attend a training course where they can benefit from other users’ eBay experience,” said McDonagh. eBay’s two key training partners in Thailand, Megabaht and ThaiVenture, periodically conduct training courses at the beginner level, which covers registration and selling basics; and the intermediate level, which focuses on in-depth selling techniques. The courses are currently available in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya, with other locations to be added soon. “Our aim is to increase awareness among Thai Internet users of the boundless opportunity of eBay. We will continue to invest in initiatives that will help Thai sellers grow their export sales. This includes supporting and equipping the eBay Community in Thailand to buy from and sell to the world; working with local partners to organize selling classes for different tiers of eBay sellers; partnerships with local agencies to help promote Thai products globally; and constantly updating eBay.co.th. We believe that Thai people and companies will recognize the tremendous potential eBay offers as the leading global online marketplace and we expect our registered user base here to continue to grow,” concluded McDonagh. About eBay Founded in 1995, eBay created a powerful platform for the sale of goods and services by a passionate community of individuals and businesses. On any given day, there are millions of items across thousands of categories for sale on eBay. eBay enables trade on a local, national and international basis with customized sites in markets around the world.
