Avnet Electronics Marketing Ranked 11th in Inaugural InformationWeek China Business Technology 100

BEIJING, Nov. 24--Xinhua-PRNewswire-AsiaNet/InfoQuest

Avnet Electronics Marketing, the largest operating group of leading global distributor of electronic components and computer products, Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT) today announced it has been ranked No. 11 in the China InformationWeek 100 list of the nation's best users of information technology. Avnet Electronics Marketing was chosen from a preliminary list covering 26 industries and nearly every large-scale company doing business in China.

The InformationWeek China Business Technology 100 Research follows the research methodology and procedures of the InformationWeek 500, which has tracked the technology practices of the most innovative companies in America for the last 17 years. The latest list documents business technology strategies, investments and administrative practices.

"The InformationWeek China 100 highlights the power of innovation in information technology rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders. Our research extends to a company's ability to effectively compose IT strategies, set IT spending, establish IT management, use IT to impact business and generate the capacity to produce the greatest return on investment with a limited budget," said Geoffrey He, Executive Editor of InformationWeek China.

"Achieving this high ranking in InformationWeek China's first Business Technology 100 is proof of the diligence and professionalism of Avnet's business units and the technical expertise and commitment of the IT organisation," said Louis Lam, vice president of Avnet Asia Pte Ltd.

Avnet Electronics Marketing was recognised for excellence in a number of areas including process optimisation, supply chain innovation and productivity.

"As a global technology distributor with more than 100,000 customers and 300 suppliers, Avnet Electronics Marketing competes in the global technology market based on its supply chain efficiency. In 2004, we expanded our use of RosettaNet B2B process standards in Asia by becoming the first electronics distributor to electronically exchange data via e-Hub with a customer in China -- FiberHome, China's top telecommunication equipment manufacturer," said Lam.

Based on the success of this initial implementation, Avnet has also implemented similar solution with Shenzhen Kaifa Technology, a top manufacturer of IT and industrial products, and is working with other companies in China to establish additional RosettaNet-based real-time exchange relationships.

Avnet Electronics Marketing was also recognised on the productivity front for its integration and creation of a single unified ERP system across Asia.

"Previously Avnet Sunrise Ltd and Chinatronics Ltd, were supported by a comprehensive legacy ERP system named Envision while other business units were using an SAP R/3 ERP system. Due to our significant business growth in Hong Kong and China in resent years, we determined the need for a scalable common ERP platform to support all current and future growth in Asia. We launched a project to migrate the entire Hong Kong and China business organizations from the Envision system to SAP," said Lam.

The project successfully migrated approximately 350 new users supporting more than 600 employees, requiring a total of 3,500 training hours due to proximity of the new users being dispersed in 21 offices in various cities in Hong Kong/China.

"Innovation lies that the heart of what makes Avnet Electronics Marketing a global leader and a key player in one of the world's most important markets -- China. This recognition by InformationWeek China is proof positive that Avnet is exploiting the latest technology to deliver something even more important than components to our customers -- we give them value. That, like the 11th place ranking in the InformationWeek China 100 list, is something that you cannot buy. It has to be earned," said Ed Kamins, chief operational excellence officer, Avnet.
