Otis Elevator Company has won a contract to install 46 elevators and escalators, featuring the energy-efficient and environmentally friendly Gen2(TM) and Elevonic(R) elevator systems, for the second phase of Beijing Fortune Plaza in China. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corporation(NYSE: UTX).
Previously, Otis was selected to provide 44 elevators and escalators for the first phase of the project. Otis will provide a total of 90 units for phase one and two with a combined contract award of USD 9 million.
"Choosing Otis to provide vertical transportation systems for the first
and now the second phase of Beijing Fortune Plaza demonstrates the continued confidence our customers have in the superior quality and performance of our products," said Otis President Ari Bousbib. At Otis, we are proud to provide products that are energy efficient and environmentally friendly and are pleased to continue our support of China's sustainable development policy by partnering with our customers to develop 'green' buildings."
Otis is the first elevator company ever to receive the Green Product Award from the China Environmental Protection Foundation, a non-government group
dedicated to environmental protection. The foundation recognized Otis for its Gen2 belted, machine-roomless elevator system. The Gen2 elevator system's flat, polyurethane belts and gearless machine do not require any form of polluting lubrication, eliminating the need for storage, cleanup and disposal of hazardous waste. The Gen2 system is also 50 percent more energy efficient than conventional elevators because its low-inertia, permanent magnet gearless machine with variable frequency control eliminates energy loss that occurs in more traditional geared systems.
Gen2 systems have been installed in landmark projects such as Christ the
Redeemer monument in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Zhangjiang Industry Park in Shanghai, China; the Tesco building in the United Kingdom; subway line in Tianjin, China; Shanghai metro's mass transit line 6 in the Pudong District; and La Finca in Madrid, Spain.
Otis' Elevonic class of gearless elevators is also among the most energy-
efficient in the world. The Elevonic system features a regenerative drive system, which returns energy to a building's electrical grid for reuse, as well as a permanent magnet motor, which conserves power. In addition, the Elevonic's efficient dispatching system saves energy by reducing the number of starts and stops while minimizing passenger waiting and ride times.
The Elevonic product has been featured as the elevator of choice in many
landmark projects throughout the world including Roppongi Hills in Tokyo; 2 International Finance Center in Hong Kong; Bank of America building in Guangzhou, China; Goldman Sachs in New Jersey, United States; AOL/Time Warner in New York City; Torre Picasso in Madrid, Spain; and the Petronas twin towers in Malaysia.
When completed, Beijing Fortune Plaza will cover 7.8 million square feet
(720,000 square meters) in the core of Beijing's Central Business District(CBD). Five high-rise buildings will be located in the plaza, including an 843-foot (257-meter) high main building. Office space, luxury apartments, a 5-star hotel, conference center and an art center are planned for this development. The total investment in this project is USD 740 million (RMB 6 billion). In China, Beijing Fortune Plaza is considered one of the landmarks symbolizing Beijing in the new century.
Beijing Fortune Plaza complex will be completed in 3 phases. Phase 2
includes a 5-star hotel and a high-rise apartment building. Phase 1 involved
construction of 2.7 million square feet (250,000 square meters) of space for a 40-story office building, 40-story apartment building, 10-story service apartment building and eight-story office building. Phase 3 will include the construction of a 260-meter high office building.
