Only company with two mentions in top ten
TNT Express - the world's leading business to business express carrier - has announced that it has achieved top ranking in the annual 'Best Employer in Europe' survey. The study, conducted by Hewitt Associates, the leading US-based Human Resources outsourcing and consulting firm, assessed the people management practices of 196 leading European companies. TNT Estonia and TNT Austria were ranked in first and sixth place respectively, a significant achievement as no other company made two appearances in the top 10.
A total of 27,000 employees - from companies in Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland and the UK took part in the survey and the ranking was decided by an independent judging panel, which included academics, HR professionals and other business leaders. TNT beat off competition from other leading global companies including Microsoft Hungary, Real Seguros, Skandia Versicherung Management & Services GmbH and National Instruments Europe.
In order to achieve first place, TNT Estonia was rigorously assessed on its management practices, starting with an employee engagement survey, which measured employees' emotional and intellectual commitment and job satisfaction. This was followed by a human resources audit, which analyses companies' practices and policies, a business leader questionnaire on the management's approach to leading people and a Works Council questionnaire on corporate culture. The Estonian subsidiary of TNT Express was recognised for what Hewitt Associates describe as the "outstanding training and positive attitude of its workforce" as well as for staff involvement in the company's strategy.
TNT Austria - which achieved sixth place in the survey - was also recognised for the quality of its training. In addition, it was praised for its commitment to staff development and for the equal treatment of all employees, regardless of their position within the organisation.
James McCormac, Chief Operating Officer, TNT Express, said: "This sort of recognition does not just happen, it is the result of real team efforts and excellent leadership. I am especially proud that two of our country organisations are represented in the top 10 - this is an outstanding achievement and Hewitt Associates remarked that this indicates that TNT Express has a successful global corporate culture. The ranking clearly highlights the impact of staff satisfaction on service quality and financial results - both TNT Estonia and TNT Austria are providing excellent and improving profit performance. The result also reflects the fact that TNT Express is the first ever company to achieve global recognition as an Investor in People (IiP) and has clear processes in place for recruiting, equipping, developing and empowering its people."
"The winners share two things." said Wolf-Bertram von Bismarck, Senior Consultant with Hewitt in Wiesbaden, Germany. "They have high scores for what Hewitt calls engagement - employees' identification with the company - and alignment, which indicates how closely the company's corporate vision and strategy matches that of employees and the company's human-resource practices."
