Advocacy group practices what it preaches by implementing GIS tools
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Jan. 7, 2002 - The Association for Geographic Information (AGI) has decided to manage its own business matters more effectively by using the geographic information technology it has promoted for the past 12 years. AGI has selected Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions' GeoMedia products - GeoMedia, GeoMedia Professional, and GeoMedia WebMap - for implementation in its offices. The London-based AGI will use GeoMedia to analyze its membership, plan events, and deliver services more efficiently to its members throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
"In a case of 'practicing what we preach,' AGI decided it was time to use the benefits of GIS to manage our affairs more effectively," said Mark Linehan, AGI director. "We chose the GeoMedia technology because it provides desktop- and server-based solutions with the ability to integrate data from different sources, and it enables different levels of access to our staff."
With corporate sponsors in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, AGI is an advocacy group whose mission is to maximize the use of geographic information and technology for the benefit of citizens, government, and commerce. AGI accomplishes these objectives through a wide range of activities including lobbying, a Web site, numerous publications, specialized seminars, and an annual conference. The association has also formed several regional and technical special interest groups.
Serving diverse clients
Immediate plans for the new GIS call for incorporating digital maps of the United Kingdom and geocoded records of AGI membership into GeoMedia. Association analysts will then query the AGI database through the GIS to view member profiles against a geographic backdrop, revealing regional trends based on membership type, business sector, interests, or preferred AGI activities.
AGI will use the results of these analyses to market and promote events and seminars. GeoMedia will identify where events should be held based on the interest, status, and location of member companies. With the help of geographic targeting, AGI can conserve resources by pitching events to members most likely to attend. In turn, members will feel that AGI services are more tailored to their needs and locations.
AGI also plans to use the Intergraph GIS software to develop case studies that can be employed in lobbying programs to raise awareness of geographic information applications.
"We believe that our staff will be satisfied that GeoMedia provides the right combination of user friendliness and flexibility," adds Linehan.
Intergraph is now in the process of training the entire AGI staff in the use of GeoMedia for virtually all aspects of membership services, from mailing list generation to advanced geographic analysis. AGI will also use GeoMedia WebMap to make select membership information available to members on the association's new Web site, scheduled to launch in the near future.
