SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ -- The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has upgraded its existing core backbone network by adding Extreme Networks, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: EXTR) next generation BlackDiamond(R) inferno series modules. Connecting more than 100 Internet Service Provider (ISPs) members across 6 exchange points in London, LINX is now switching more than 120 times its original traffic capacity.

Building on the existing BlackDiamond switches installed in LINX's Metro network, the new modules are based on Extreme Networks' inferno chipset silicon and allow for routing of IP traffic at wire-speed on all switch ports. BlackDiamond's superior modularity and passive backplane design enabled LINX to dramatically increase bandwidth without having to remove the chassis. All the existing modules were compatible with the new switching fabric, allowing for a seamless upgrade.

The BlackDiamond scalable switching system ensures guaranteed multi-gigabit performance on the switch regardless of network speed without congestion or packet loss. In addition to increasing the speed of routing, the upgrade has ensured that LINX is now able to sustain twice the level of network activity, having doubled the port density of each BlackDiamond chassis.

The simplicity and scalability of the network design paired with the fact that Extreme Networks' products share a common architecture ensured an efficient and rapid upgrade with minimal downtime.
