LUCENTTECH. SPINOFF UNVEILS FIRST eCOMMUNICATION MODELTO HELP ENTERPRISES QUICKLY MOVE INTONEXT WAVE OF eBUSINESS

Bangkok--May 2--Shandwick International (Thailand) New Enterprise Networks Group also announces initatives with Andersen Consulting, eLoyalty and PricewaterhouseCoopers The new Enterprise Networks Group being spun off from Lucent Technologies announced today several major initiatives to provide next-generation systems and solutions for personalized eBusiness communication. As a first step, the company introduced an open, flexible communication model that will enable enterprises -- from start-ups to established companies -- to move quickly into the next wave of eBusiness. The new nterprise Networks Group also announced it is working with Andersen Consulting, eLoyalty and PricewaterhouseCoopers to develop, sell and integrate enterprise-wide eBusiness solutions. Called the eCommunication model, the standards-based model is designed to take much of the complexity out of building, integrating and converging the multiple intelligent networks and multimedia applications businesses need to connect with their customers, suppliers, partners and employees. With it, enterprises will be able to quickly migrate their businesses beyond the content- and transaction-based interactions that have defined eBusiness until now, to personalized, relationship-based communication and collaboration that helps link virtual organizations to improve efficiency and build long-term customer loyalty. The company also said it plans to establish a consortium of technology leaders to participate in defining and developing software components of the model, set up an eBusiness interoperability lab, and expand its existing ISV program to include software developers wanting to write applications for the model. "eBusiness is undergoing a transformation driven by changing business models and by customer desire to interact with businesses over any medium, through any device, at any time and from anywhere," said Don Peterson, president and CEO of Lucent's new Enterprise Networks Group. "With eCommunication, we are taking eBusiness beyond 'clicks and calls' toward effortless, relationship-based communication that will help enterprises capture and hold customer loyalty." The new Enterprise Networks Group's approach to eCommunication builds on its vast experience and success in helping both startups and established businesses build communication networks and solutions for call centers, messaging and customer relationship management. The model's open, modular design gives enterprises in any stage of eBusiness the ability to integrate new technology into existing systems or quickly build an entirely new communication-enabled eBusiness system. "As a new company, we are focused on delivering a personalized home financing experience powered by the most advanced multi-media customer relationship technologies," said Richard G. Thornberry, president and CEO, Nexstar Financial Corporation. "This new eCommunication model will enable us to fully integrate our eBusiness communication systems, resulting in a seamless customer experience regardless of the customer's choice of media. It will provide us with critical speed to market and allow us to quickly respond to our customers' rapidly changing needs. The eCommunication model is consistent with our view of what our customers expect in the future. We look forward to working with the new Enterprise Networks Group to leverage these capabilities to further build our business going forward." "With the relationships announced today and its extensive experience in customer care, the new Enterprise Networks Group is uniquely positioned in our industry to lead the enterprise to the successful deployment of eBusiness processes and systems," said Jim Metzler, vice president, Ashton, Metzler & Associates. "It is one of the few companies to recognize that enterprises are at different starting points in eBusiness with different needs and goals, and to design a highly adaptable solution to get them where they want to go." The initiatives announced today with Andersen Consulting, eLoyalty and PricewaterhouseCoopers are among the first the new company expects to establish with leading consultants, professional services organizations and technology leaders to develop, market and integrate enterprise-wide eBusiness solutions. The new Enterprise Networks Group is working individually with each firm to create unique solutions that range from front office to back office to hosted solutions for eBusiness. The new company plans to help customers implement the eCommunication model through an alliance with Lucent's NetworkCare professional services organization, its own CRM Professional Services organization, and through relationships with business consultants and systems integrators. The company also is forging alliances with technology leaders similar to one announced with the Sun MicroSystems in December, to communication-enable their portals and to create joint eBusiness solutions for enterprises. "These initiatives underscore our ongoing commitment to the enterprise and demonstrate how serious we are about taking eBusiness communication to a new level," Peterson said. "The requirements of delivering eBusiness solutions are wide-ranging, and we're working with some of the most creative and productive organizations in the world to help bring them to the marketplace." eCommunication model The eCommunication model organizes the scalable, high-performance and secure components enterprises need for eBusiness into three distinct layers -- Communication enabled (Comm-enabled) Portal, eBusiness Applications and Services and Network Infrastructure, and integrates them through an open, programmable software environment called the eCommunication Fabric. With the eCommunication Fabric's powerful integration and management capabilities, the eCommunication model will make it easier for businesses to "comm-enable" their portals to support multiple communications protocols and devices. It will also enable software developers to easily integrate communication flows into their eBusiness applications without requiring time-consuming customization work. With these capabilities, enterprises can tailor communication-enhanced eBusiness solutions based on user preferences and business priorities. For example, with the eCommunication model: A catalog company would be able to let a buyer browse its web site through a personal digital assistant, offer chat and click-to-talk capabilities, and send the user confirmation of the order -- all over a wireless network. An investment advisor would be able to create a single "hot news" message, automatically send it to clients based on their preferred communication medium (for example e-mail, PDA or phone), verify receipt, and accept prioritized responses through a single portal. A supplier using an outsourced shipper would be able to link a customer requesting a change in delivery date to the shipper through the supplier's portal, passing along the context of the transaction. "Reach me" software would find the right agent based on the status and profile of the customer, agent skills and availability. The Comm-enabled Portal layer delivers personalized communication and information services to customers, suppliers, partners and employees through any communication device -- PCs, personal digital assistants, phones or fax, and over any network -- IP, ATM, circuit-switched or wireless. It is a user-centric gateway to the enterprise that gives individuals secure access to the applications, information and people they need. Comm-enabled portals use multi-modal communication and network capabilities to bridge conversations that otherwise are fragmented among portals, data solutions and telecommunications. The company has already announced an initiative with the Sun-Netscape Alliance to voice-enable wireless Web browsing, reach-me, find-me, hide-me capabilities, integrated messaging, data conferencing and directory-calling to its Planet portal using Internet Message Management and Voice Browser applications, www.messenger and DEFINITY Anywhere solutions. The eBusiness Applications and Services layer includes eBusiness Applications typically aimed at automating business processes, such as billing, supply chain management, sales force automation, customer sales and service and inventory, and Applications and Communications Services, which can support and enhance multiple eBusiness applications, and includes contact centers, messaging and collaboration services. Also within this layer is the eCommunication Fabric, which integrates communication and business processes, and commlets, which are modular software objects that support the rapid development of communication enabled eBusiness applications. The eCommunication Fabric is an open, programmable set of integrated communication, collaboration and Web-enabled business software that uses a range of integration services to provide seamless interoperability among multi-vendor products and applications to support anytime, anywhere, anymedia communications. This software also supports the rules for moving information and communication flows between people and systems, while maintaining the integrity of the applications within and between enterprises. The eCommunication Fabric and commlets, currently under development, will be available beginning in the fourth quarter. Commlets are communication applets, programmable objects that use the services of the eCommunication Fabric to integrate communications services -- such as connection management, media conversion, contact management, context management, resource management, quality of service, security and access control, and billing services -- with eBusiness applications. Commlets will simplify the integration of complex communication services into eBusiness applications, reducing the cost and complexity of eBusiness applications. Commlets will allow application developers to easily comm-enable vertical applications for eBusiness regardless of the infrastructure. For example, an ISV using the commlets could write a converged data/voice application without the need to understand telephony. The new Enterprise Networks Group plans to establish a consortium of companies that will participate in defining and developing the commlets to industry standards, as well as helping to evolve relevant industry standards. The company also will draw on its expertise in computer telephony integration (CTI), which it has developed to link data and voice applications in call centers. The new Enterprise Networks Group also plans to expand its existing ISV program to include developers writing applications for commlets, and will make a software developers toolkit available for ISVs. The Network Infrastructure layer comprises multivendor network services and network systems for secure, transaction-aware and relationship-aware communication networking. Network services include policy management software, address management software, security and network management. The network systems components include LAN switches, secure VPNs, load balancing, caching, gateways, data and telephony servers, WAN access devices, routers, web and applications servers, and data storage servers. Getting Started The new Enterprise Networks Group offers many of the components enterprises need to start using the eCommunication model today, including the award-winning Cajun Campus switches; the DEFINITY server, with its ability to support voice over IP and ATM; virtual private networks; Lucent Managed Firewall; its broad suite of CentreVu customer relationship management solutions, including CRM Central 2000 and CentreVu Internet Solutions; Octel and INTUITY messaging; policy management such as RealNet Rules; directory services; and Cosm portfolio of IP-based applications. In addition, this year the Enterprise Networking Group plans to introduce eBusiness offers targeted at small and mid-sized businesses, and for specific industries such as finance and healthcare. The company will set up an interoperability lab for developers to test applications with the eCommunication model and eCommunication Fabric, and will launch a certification program to help its customers and BusinessPartners develop expertise in designing and implementing eBusiness solutions.
