LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES NAMES MICHAEL J. BUTCHER PRESIDENT OF INTERNATIONAL SALES FOR SERVICE PROVIDER NETWORKS

Bangkok--May 4--Aziam Burson Marsteller Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) has today announced the appointment of Michael J. (Mike) Butcher to the newly created position of president, international sales, Service Provider Networks. Currently, Butcher is president and chief executive officer of Lucent Technologies' Services Provider Networks in the Asia Pacific region. He will continue in this position. In his new expanded role, he will also have responsibility for all of Lucent's Service Provider Networks sales and marketing activities in the Europe, Middle East and Africa; Caribbean and Latin America; and China regions. Overall, Lucent grew its business outside the United States by 47 per cent in fiscal 1999 and accounted for about 32 per cent of total revenues (up from about 26 per cent of total revenues in 1998). "I am delighted that Mike will assume overall leadership of our international business for service providers. He brings an extraordinary breadth of skills, experience and strong customer relationships to the job," said Patricia F. Russo, executive vice president and chief executive officer, Service Provider Networks, Lucent Technologies. "I will look to Mike to concentrate sharply on executing the solutions necessary to serve our customers outside of North America." Butcher joined Lucent Asia Pacific in 1997 and has been instrumental in expanding the company's presence, market share and customer base throughout the Asia Pacific region including the opening of seven Bell Labs. He also led Lucent's entry into Australia where in the last 18 months the company has won in excess of US$1 billion dollars in business. Before joining Lucent Technologies, Butcher was president, Electronic Data Systems (EDS) Australia and New Zealand and a member of the company's Asia Pacific executive committee. During his four-year tenure at EDS, which he joined in 1993, Butcher built a successful and complex services business, the company's largest business in the Asia Pacific region, including consulting, systems development and integration, and systems management. He also established its Asia Pacific resources/software centre. Prior to joining EDS, Butcher held roles in sales, sales management, and marketing with Datapoint Corporation, Alcatel and Wang Australia. At Wang, he was managing director of the Australian operation, which included sales, hardware and software support services, marketing, corporate functions and a manufacturing operation. He joined Olivetti in Australia in 1971 where, over a 10-year period, he held roles in sales, sales management and marketing. Butcher began his career in the UK in 1969 as a systems engineer. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in the UK and has attended various management courses including INSEAD in Paris and the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, in North Carolina. By the end of September, Lucent Technologies intends to spin off its enterprise communications systems, business cabling and LAN-based data networking businesses into a separate US$8 billion company focused on delivering next-generation communications networks for enterprises. The new company will be the worldwide leader in messaging and call centers, the US leader in voice communications systems, and will have the largest sales and services force in the industry. Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA, designs and delivers the systems, software, silicon and services for next-generation communications networks for service providers and enterprises. The company has operations in 90 countries with over 150,000 employees. International headquarters locations for the Service Providers Networks group are in Hong Kong, Beijing, Miami and Hilversum, the Netherlands. Backed by the research and development of Bell Labs, Lucent focuses on high-growth areas such as optical and wireless networks; Internet infrastructure; communications software; communications semiconductors and optoelectronics; Web-based enterprise solutions that link private and public networks; and professional network design and consulting services.
