First Mongolian Graduate Excels in Business Studies

Bangkok--Apr 26--Curtin University of Technology The first Mongolian-born student to graduate from one of Australia's biggest and most cosmopolitan university business schools has excelled in her studies, winning a number of key awards and prizes. 20-year-old Enkhmaa Emma Davanyam, born in Ulan Bator, is now working at an accounting firm in Western Australia, having graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce, Banking and Finance degree from the prestigious Curtin Business School (CBS) at Curtin University of Technology. Currently more than half of Curtin Business School's enrolment of students comes from offshore, from about 45 countries, including Mongolia. More than 3,000 Curtin Business School students are enrolled in off-shore programs at partner institutions such as the University of Hong Kong, Indonesia's IEU Institute of Management and Metropolitan College, Malaysia. CBS Acting Executive Dean, Associate Professor Kevin McKenna, said the School was very proud of Emma's achievements. "In her final year at CBS, Emma received a CCH Australia award for Law Banking after obtaining the highest score in that subject," Associate Professor McKenna said. "She was named on the prestigious Curtin Vice Chancellor's List for being in the top one per cent of students. Emma is also a member of the Curtin chapter of the Golden Key National Honours Society and in May, she will receive an Australian Institute of Banking and Finance award for the highest overall score in Bank Lending and Banking Practice and Management. She has certainly been an outstanding student." Currently working as an auditor with the accounting firm Ernst and Young in Perth, Emma, who plans to become a chartered accountant, said she was very pleased to have decided to study at CBS. "The lecturers were very keen to assist and support me," she said. "The quality of the courses and the assistance you get makes it an encouraging environment for study." Despite the vast cultural differences between Australia and Mongolia, Emma says they both offer a 'laid back' lifestyle, so she has easily settled into the Australian way of life. Having studied English in Mongolia she has also had little difficulty understanding Australia's colloquialisms. Emma said she enjoyed the multi-cultural atmosphere at CBS that comes with studying alongside the students from many different countries who have chosen to obtain their degree at CBS. Although Emma has paved the way for a growing number of undergraduate students, CBS has already had several postgraduate students from Mongolia, who are now working in senior government positions back in Mongolia. Curtin has strong on-going relationships with Mongolia. Since 1995, Curtin's International Business Unit has coordinated the on-going Management Development Program (MDP) for Mongolia, aimed at fostering a modern management culture in that country's private and public sectors. The Mongolian Government, in conjunction with AusAID and UNDP, sponsored a project for the retraining of Mongolian Business School Academics. Three successive cycles have been successfully completed with some 40 per cent of all Mongolian Business Academics undergoing training through the project. The success of the program can be seen by the further extension provided by UNDP and AusAID for another phase. The IBU's Senior fellow, Curtin's Professor Samir Chatterjee worked as a UN adviser in Mongolia during 1994-95, and has been the project leader for a large UN project for the past four years. His work in Mongolian higher education led to him being honoured by the Mongolian Government as the country's first Adjunct Professor at the National Institute of Administration and Management Development. CBS is a major regional business management training school, and, with its mix of international and Australian students, is now one of the most cosmopolitan in the world.
