Lucent’s Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and multifunction switches range from sophisticated stackable units serving desktops, to high-performance backbone chassis capable of moving vast amounts of data traffic easily and quickly. All products in the portfolio share a common naming convention, and are now identified in the market by Lucent’s expanding Cajun brand . Designed and built by Lucent at Bell Laboratories and Technology Centers and in the United States and Tel Aviv, Israel, these initial members of Lucent’s Cajun Campus product suite support from hundreds to tens of thousands of connections on a network. They also scale in performance from four gigabits per second (Gbps) to 80 Gbps. According to Amarjit Momi, Offer Manager, Data Networking Systems, Lucent Technologies, "Our Cajun Campus products span the entire performance and configuration range from multigigabit stackable units with true stacking scalability, to backbone chassis switches with up to 80 gigabits per second of switching capacity. This superb technology offers better reliability, manageability and advanced quality of service at significantly lower costs than the previous generation. Our customers can deploy networks today that will take them far into the future, while fully accommodating their complex migration needs." "Our future plans are quite aggressive in this space," Mr Momi continued. "Several additional new products that will further cement our technology leadership are targeted for introduction in 1999." Unique SMON Capabilities The Cajun Campus products take advantage of its unrivaled Switch MONitoring (SMONิ) functionality, the only network management application that enables managers to view traffic anywhere in the network, from a single link to the entire network at once. Developed by LANNET, SMON allows simultaneous monitoring of real-time network traffic across multiple switches in a network and across all ports in a single switch. The Cajun P110, M400 and M770 product families all support SMON today, and other members of the Cajun Campus portfolio will have this unique capability by mid-1999. Network Management Lucent’s Cajun Campus portfolio is managed by the CajunViewิ suite of SNMP-based network management applications. These applications are integrated with HP's OpenView (UNIX and Windows), and IBM’s NetView/AIX platforms. NetCare Services All Cajun Campus products are supported by Lucent’s NetCareา Services organization, a global team of service and support professionals who provide a broad set of consulting, integration, management and maintenance services for multivendor data and video networks, voice systems and networks and call centers. Cajun Campus Product Details With over 10 different models available, the Cajun P110 Switching System is a series of sophisticated stackable switches designed to cost-effectively meet the networking needs of medium-sized enterprises, as well as smaller sites of large enterprises. The P110 enables up to four switch units to be stacked, connected together by an external four Gbps, non-blocking backplane that allows users to mix-and-match 10/100/1000 megabits per second (Mbps) Ethernet and ATMพall managed as a single logical switch. The P110 family offers up to 96 switched 10 Mbps ports and up to 100 switched 10/100 Mbps ports in a stack, plus high-speed uplinks for additional 100 Mbps, Gigabit Ethernet or ATM OC-3 connectivity. Lucent’s Cajun P220 Gigabit Switches are a family of fixed-configuration workgroup and wiring closet switches that also support smaller gigabit backbones. The P220 is available in two base versions: the P220FE offers 24 ports of 10/100 Mbps Ethernet with one Gigabit Ethernet port, while the P220G provides seven ports of Gigabit Ethernet. Both the P220FE and the P220G have an optional expansion slot that supports either an additional Gigabit Ethernet port, two fiber Fast Ethernet ports or four, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports. The P220 family seamlessly integrates with legacy network equipment, and incorporates Lucent’s unique OpenTrunkิ technology that allows it to interoperate with Virtual LANs from 3Com and Cisco. The Cajun M400 Gate Switches are modular, multifunction, data center platforms designed to bring the benefits of high-speed switching and routing to legacy networks. Available in three chassis sizes, ranging from five to 18 slots, the M400 line integrates support for 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, ATM, FDDI and multilayer switching into a single platform with extensive fault tolerance and redundancy features. The award-winning M400 family is ideal for migrating routed or legacy switched networks to next-generation Gigabit Ethernet and ATM technologies, and provides the switching throughput and class-leading latency and jitter performance that enable the introduction of voice/video applications over both high-speed and legacy networks. The M400’s available hardware-based IP/IPX routing module combines over one million packets per second forwarding speed with full support for routing protocols such as RIP and OSPF, enabling compatibility with existing routed networks while providing high-speed routing performance over existing Ethernet and FDDI backbones. Optimized for integration with Lucent’s DEFINITYา ATM Enterprise Communications Server, the Cajun A500 ATM Switch is a mid-sized,10 Gbps backbone platform that offers up to 32 OC-3 ports, up to eight OC-12 ports and, in the future, DS-3 interfaces. For support of convergence of voice, video and data for multimedia applications, the modular Cajun A500 incorporates advanced Bell Labs traffic management algorithms, and also provides end-to-end clock synchronization designed specifically for voice over ATM. With flexible buffering, industry-standard ATM signaling and traffic prioritization, the A500 can handle up to 25 percent more switched voice and data traffic than competitive solutions. Lucent’s acclaimed Gigabit Ethernet platform, the Cajun P550 Gigabit Routing Switch, is a multilayer (Layer 2 switching; Layer 3 routing), 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet switch designed for wire-speed, campus-wide backbones and high-density, high-performance closets.
