Bangkok--Apr 9--Bay Networks
Bay Networks, Inc. recently announced that its Accelar 1200 routing switch was named PC Week Lab’s Analyst Choice in the publication’s Feb. 9 issue. At the same time, The Tolly Group, an independent testing organization, announced that the Accelar 1200 routing switch outperformed its competitors in head-to-head tests.
PC Week, a leading information technology publication, noted that “unlike competing products, management wasn’t an afterthought in the Accelar 1200 – it has every option an IS manager needs.” Among other favored product attributes the lab test verified is that the Accelar 1200 achieves wire-speed Layer 3 forwarding with zero packet loss (see attached graph). PC Week stated that although other vendors are still just promising high-density Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet switches with advanced features, Bay Networks has delivered one in the Accelar 1200. Able to accommodate 96 fast Ethernet ports or 12 Gigabit Ethernet ports, the switch has extensive management capabilities, a scalable design and a modular chassis.
The article further stated that most Gigabit Ethernet products are still quite immature. For example 3Com Corporation’s CoreBuilder 3500, shipped late last year, is fast as lightning but lacks support for the OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol, QOS (quality of service) and RMON. The Accelar1200 not only supports all these features, but also makes them easy to use.
The Tolly Group, a strategic consulting and independent testing organization, stated that Bay Networks Accelar 1200 routing switch out performed Cisco Systems’ Catalyst 5500 in areas of performance, zero loss throughput, and latency over Fast Ethernet. The Tolly Group noted that the Accelar 1200 provided wire-speed IP routing performance across a pair of Fast Ethernet ports and for all of the test scenarios (up to 10 streams), and that the device responded with near linear throughput. By contrast, the Catalyst 5500 switch achieved wire-speed performance only during the single-stream test, and performance fell off steadily after the four-stream test.
Results also showed that Bay Networks’ Accelar 1200 routing switch outpaced the Cisco Systems Catalyst 5500 switch in packet performance. In a dual-stream test for Fast Ethernet, the Accelar 1200 routing switch delivered wire-speed performance of 297,620 64 byte packets per second (PPS), while the Cisco Catalyst 5500 switch became saturated at only 168,162 pps. In addition, while the Accelar 1200 routing switch delivered consistent latency results over a mix of multi-stream tests, the Catalyst 5500 switch served up unstable results when latency tests were run with more than two streams.
Thongpipat Poshyananda, Country Manager of Bay Networks (Thailand) stated that these accolades reinforce Bay Networks Adaptive Networking strategy for enabling easy migration of today’s networks to the IP optimized networks of tomorrow. PC Week’s Lab lauded the Accelar 1200 for its blazing performance, advanced management capabilities and scalability. These benefits reflect our commitment to leading the new routing switch market with best-in-class products that provide our customers with reduced complexity and investment protection.”
Lloyd Carney, executive vice president and general manager for Bay Networks’ Enterprise Business Group said “The Accelar routing switches provide the performance, latency and throughput advantages that are necessary in today’s high-bandwidth, Internet-driven networks, without the associated higher costs of routing.”
