British Council Thailand and the Thailand Research Fund Sign MoU for Research Collaboration Opportunities

17 Million Baht pledged under the Researcher Links initiative will cover 7 workshops in Thailand and 12 travel grants
The British Council Thailand and The Thailand Research Fund (TRF) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to initiate collaboration in research development, and to jointly support sustainable projects that will provide benefits to researchers from Thailand and the UK.
Under this MoU, the two organisations have committed to provide a matching fund basis worth 17 Million Baht to be used for a series of workshops and to award travel grants for Thailand and UK-based researchers in priority areas such as Environmental and Biological Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Technology Transfer.
The signing ceremony was held at the British Embassy residence, in the presence of His Excellency Mark Kent, the British Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Mr. Kiattikhun Chartprasert, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Barbara Woodward CMG, OBE, Director-General Economic and Consular, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
“Bilateral research collaboration will be very beneficial for both Thailand and the UK because young researchers will be enriched by sharing developments, techniques and experiences with their colleagues from other countries,” said Mr Chris Gibson OBE, British Council Country Director, Thailand.
“Through the funding provided by the British Council and the Thailand Research Fund, we hope to open a world of opportunities for early-career researchers so they can co-design collaborations that will enable them to work on an international scale in the future,” he added. “This is an excellent example of collaboration between the UK and Thailand that highlights the British Council’s mission to promote the advancement of scientific, technological and educational cooperation which we call cultural relations”
This agreement comes at a propitious time when Thailand is putting a lot of effort into improving its research and innovation potential. With the onset of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) integration in 2015, Thailand is preparing to play an important role in developing the region.
“This new Memorandum of Understanding marks an important step forward for research development in Thailand. We look forward to working closely with the British Council to organize workshops covering mutually-relevant themes and to provide the opportunities for the early-career researchers from the UK and Thailand to foster the initial links. In the near future, we believe that active and sustained research collaborations can be established and their research outputs shall be materialized from future collaborative research projects. Furthermore these will surely benefit the people of our two countries, our two regions and our world”, said Prof. Suthipun Jitpimolmard, TRF Director.
Under the British Council Researcher Links programme, top UK institutions such as Imperial College London, SOAS, University of London, University of Liverpool and University of Nottingham, are being connected with Thai universities such as Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, Kasetsart University and Khon Kaen University, to facilitate interaction between young researchers and well-established researchers in various fields.
Seven high-level workshops have been scheduled with the special collaboration of well-respected academics in specific fields of research. In addition, 12 travel grants will also be awarded to deserving researchers, 6 from Thailand and 6 from the UK, for a high-level exchange programme that will build sustainable collaborations and relationships that are based on cooperation and trust over the long term.
