Sodexo Thailand STOP Hunger 2011: Solace in Bang Na Expressway Community

Bangkok--20 May--Sodexo

On the 15th of May, Sodexo Thailand’s STOP Hunger Servathon activities culminated in a grand food service for inhabitants of Bangna Choomchon (slum) which is home to 230 extended families; a total of over 1,000 people. In addition, staff handed out 260 care parcels amongst the shanty town, containing children’s toys, toiletries, dried foodstuffs and various useful household items. The previous 4 Fridays, staff from 3 Sodexo hospital sites – Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital, Bangkok Medical Center and Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital as well as the Asian Institute of Technology had given educational talks on nutrition and hygiene then organised games and served lunch for children from the area. Word spread of the activity and whilst we were pleased that 70 children participated on the first Friday, by the last day over 130 turned up eager to join in the fun. Sodexo suppliers embraced the spirit of the occasion with Prosperlink Co., Ltd and PP Brilliant Star Co., Ltd providing classroom and sports materials as well as gaming activities and Sompong Sittikonsommanut, MS Farm, Span Marine Co., Ltd, Jantana Lairasitporn, Uniliver Thai Trading Ltd, T. Charoen Market Co., Ltd, Sauce no.9 Co., Ltd, Silver Pattana (SVP), Loxley Public Co., Ltd, Thai Namthip Limited, Eamtip Rice Co., Ltd, CPF Trading Co., Ltd, The Commercial Company of Siam Ltd and Sea Tours Co., Ltd contributing food, drink, snacks and ice creams. Sodexo Thailand’s CEO Stuart Winters was delighted at the success of the project: “These people are a neglected section of society. They aren’t destitute but have been scraping a living in Bangkok for years, displaced by property developers and subsisting without Government assistance. Despite their tenuous circumstances, I have been impressed with their dignity and cheerfulness. It was a great day all round. I couldn’t tell who had more fun, the kids or my staff.” About STOP Hunger Sodexo launched the STOP Hunger initiative in 1996 to fight hunger and its root causes.
