300 mangroves were planted by Technical Thalang SAP and Indigo Pearl.

Bangkok--24 Feb--Indigo Pearl

At Phuket Marine National Parks Research Center in Thachatchai students from Technical Thalang College organized a mangrove planting and environmental education event for students from Tah Chat Chai School. In total 300 trees were planted by the 100 students who participated in this event. Mr. Chokdee Intreegrub (Assist. Aor Bor Tol nai Yohk Mai Kow), Mr. Suwut Limphanon and Mr. Somporn Thaweegarn (Assist. Directors of Technical Thalang College ) were the opening speakers for this full day event which aimed to restore two mangrove areas located along Thachatchai Mangrove Forest Nature Trail and educate students about the importance of mangrove ecosystems. For the last four months, students from Technical Thalang College have been designing this project along with another environmental project they implemented last month at Muang Mai School to educate students about global warming, recycling, reducing wastes, effects of litter, making lifestyle changes, and other ways to help protect the environment. Indigo Pearl and Seedlings of Change (www.seedlingsofchange.org) helped support this Student Action Program (S.A.P.) designed by nonprofit organization, Sustainable Smiles. The students were required to survey their local community and conduct questionnaires to gain knowledge about the local needs and concerns in their community, analyze their results, and then work together in teams to design a project based on time, budget, community need, and scope. The objective of S.A.P. program is to provide students with the tools and knowledge they need to design and implement an environmental project on their own. Besides learning about Thailand’s environment and anthropogenic threats to their local ecosystems this program was designed to teach students new skills, such as leadership, entrepreneurship, teamwork, budgeting, and teaching skills. Indigo Pearl and Sustainable Smiles have been working in partnership to provide environmental education programs to students and local community members. Kelly Franklin, CEO of Sustainable Smiles, says that we have developed a strong working relationship with Indigo Pearl as we both believe that raising environmental awareness, especially to students is the most effective way to bring about sustainable change to a community. I would like to give special thanks to Indigo Pearl, Seedlings of Change, and teachers from Technical Thalang College who helped make this program a big success.” Next month, Sustainable Smiles and Indigo Pearl will be holding an awards ceremony for the students inviting their parents, teachers, and staff from Indigo Pearl. The students will also present a short environmental workshop teaching their parents and staff from Indigo Pearl about the importance of protecting the environment. “We want to empower these students to teach their parents and friends about what they have learned from this experience,” says Kelly Franklin.
