NEW POLL REVEALS THAI WOMEN SAY IT'S BEST TO DIET UNDER DOCTORS' SUPERVISION
Abbott Laboratories '10-20-30 Healthy Body Program' gaining in popularity
A new Suan Dusit poll of Bangkok women conducted for Abbott Laboratories Limited, a leader in the weight management program field, has revealed that 86% of respondents see a medically-supervised weight management program as the safest and most effective way to lose weight.
According to the poll, most women lose weight for health, beauty or professional reasons. 49% of respondents had tried some form of weight control, with the majority dieting and the remainder using exercise or medication. A majority of those questioned also said that they understood the use of anti-obesity medication alone would not provide lasting weight loss, which also required associated lifestyle changes.
Khun Ramachandrun Rajamanickum, general manager of Abbott Laboratories South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos) said: "Obesity is becoming a global health issue. According to the latest information from the World Health Organization, in 2002 some 1 billion of the world population were overweight, with 300 million among them being obese. The number has tripled since 1980 and is now considered one of the Top 10 health risks. In Thailand, 25% of women and 13% of men are obese. Obesity affects health and is related to other diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis. Incorrect weight loss methods can lead to conditions like the yo-yo effect where weight, even more than that originally lost, is put back on. In extreme cases inappropriate methods of weight loss can even be life threatening.
"Abbott Laboratories has conducted extensive research into safe and effective weight loss methods, resulting in the development of the 10-20-30 Weight Management Concept Program. This program - which aims to produce permanent weight loss - was originally initiated in America and Europe and was subsequently introduced to Thailand and South East Asia in 2001.
"Currently, The 10-20-30 Healthy Body Program by Abbott Laboratories has grown rapidly in popularity as it is easy to remember and put into action, as well as safe and effective in controlling and maintaining weight on a long-term basis. More than 300 doctors across Thailand currently supervise the program to ensure that it is correctly implemented."
Abbott Laboratories senior manager of sales and marketing Amporn Charoensomsak said: "At present the market for anti-obesity pills is worth 400 million baht, up 15 % from last year. This shows the extent of people's desire to control or lose weight. But in reality some medications may only be short-lived, making repeat purchases necessary to maintain weight control or loss.
"The 10-20-30 Healthy Body Program from Abbott Laboratories encourages those who want to lose weight to change behaviors permanently.
"The program is designed to help achieve a sustainable balance of health and beauty, rather than simply aiming for short-term and temporary weight loss. The program begins with a 10-minute consultation with a program doctor to plan a personal weight management program that includes learning about key nutrition principles in order to change the behavior that leads to obesity. The next step - the 20 - equates to a 20% reduction in daily calorie intake. The final element of '30' is a 30-minute daily exercise."
