Shin Satellite Plc., which owns the IPSTAR broadband satellite system, announced that its total sales of IPSTAR user terminals in the first quarter of 2006 had reached a cumulative total of 37,141 units, up by 11,014 units from 26,127 at the end of 2005. Many of the terminals are being used for extending the communications network of countries in the region into suburban and rural areas, providing many people with their first form of communications in remote areas.
"Since the launch of the Company's Thaicom 4 (IPSTAR) satellite in August 2005, sales of the user terminals, which include a modem and satellite dish with cables, have continued to escalate," said Mr. Paiboon Panuwattanawong, Managing Director of IPSTAR. "We believe that demand in the Asia Pacific Region is sufficient to drive sales further over the next year."
Paiboon explained the reasons for the growing number of user terminals being ordered by customers: "The IPSTAR system is one of the most cost-effective high-speed internet solutions in the market. The Asia-Pacific Region is also one of the world's fastest growing, with the demand for broadband internet access from consumers growing continuously. Due to the lack of sufficient terrestrial telecommunications networks to cover rural and remote areas, a digital divide has grown. IPSTAR is the bridge that allows people outside major urban areas to have access to high-speed internet services for the first time, at a price they can afford."
IPSTAR is fully compliant with all types of internet protocol based applications, offering users a triple play combination of voice, video and data, for modern applications like internet protocol telephony, video downloads and streaming as well as games and other entertainment media.
