Thailand, September 17, 2012: DHL Thailand, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading postal and logistics group, recently marked Global Volunteer Day 2012 in Thailand at the Sattahip Naval Base. This year’s Global Volunteer Day brought together nearly 500 volunteers from three DHL business units - DHL Express, DHL Supply Chain and DHL Global Forwarding - as part of its global drive to give back to local communities and inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees.
Consistent with the 2012 theme of “GoGreen”, the volunteers took part in several activities at the Sattahip Naval Base, including coral reef and mangrove tree planting as well as releasing nursing sharks and crabs into the sea in the Sattahip area.
GoGreen is one of the three core programs of the Group’s CR strategy and it provides a framework aimed at minimizing the impact of our business on the environment and offering sustainable logistics to our customers. Though viewed upon as simple tasks but these activities are worthy in its cause as they help to protect Thailand’s ecosystem through maintaining the ecological balance in the area.
“As a market leader and responsible member of the Thai society, DHL remains firmly committed to making sustainable and environmentally-friendly contributions to Thailand’s society and its future,” said Chananyarak Phetcharat, Managing Director, DHL Express Thailand and Indochina. “Since 2008, we have increased our community engagements throughout Thailand through a wide range of practical contributions as we are determined to make a difference to the society.”
Craig Hope-Johnstone, Country Manager, DHL Supply Chain Thailand said, “Global Volunteer Day is very much an integral part of our “Living Responsibility” strategy. Each year, we see an increasing number of employees signing up as volunteers and we identify meaningful activities that we think will best allow us to give back more to the community. This year’s activity may look simple but it definitely has a deeper meaning to many of us at DHL. ”
“Our Global Volunteer Day events are very special in Thailand as we see the strong volunteerism spirit in many of our employees.”, said Vincent Yong, Chief Operating Officer of DHL Global Forwarding Thailand. “The teamwork and dedication shown by our volunteers, from the planning to the execution on Global Volunteer Day is truly inspiring. It is also gratifying to see how much our colleagues rise up to the challenge of doing better and doing more each year as the program evolves and touches more communities in Thailand.”
Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2011, the initiative was rolled out globally with tremendous success – 60,000 volunteers in over 130 countries and territories participated in more than 600 community programs.
From 6 to 16 September this year, Deutsche Post DHL offices around the world are participating in many diverse community projects in support of various local causes. These programs deliver to the company’s three Corporate Responsibility programs – GoTeach (championing education), GoGreen (protecting the environment) and GoHelp (delivering help after natural disasters).
