Thai Airways International’s Catering Services Department has achieved another “first” in acquiring the ISO 14001 Certificate for Environmental Management.
The Catering Department is already the first THAI business unit to have received international certificates such as ISO 9001:2008 on Quality Control Management, GMP, HACCP, Hal-Q, OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series and ISO 14001:2004.
Mr. Smith Pirunsarn, Managing Director, Catering Department, said Department staff and management were all very aware of the threat posed by global warming.
“ The team is determined to work in accordance with the company’s targets. We have set our mission to spread awareness of corporate social responsibility and the environment. ISO 14001 is just one objective the Department plans to apply to the business,” Mr. Smith said.
ISO 14001 covers:
1. Functional management of environmental issues.
2. Saves costs and resources in the long term with appropriate environmental management such as a garbage waste management bio diesel program and energy saving program..
3. Supports emergency incident planning to protect and reduce the impact on the environment including lowering the cost of environmental recovery and insurance.
4. Reduction and prevention of accidents to the environment
5. Reduction of damage to the environment from production processes and use of prevention measures.
6. Increased potential of competitiveness to the business and response to customer airlines
7. Create a good image for THAI’s Catering Department and other organizations.
THAI Catering Department has employed these principles since December 2008 at its Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi branches under the auspices of the Bureau Veritas Certification (Thailand). The first audit was carried out on 1-2 July 2009, a second audit was conducted 19 – 21 August 2009 and THAI received the certificate of Environmental Management on 2 September 2009.
Mr. Smith said: “With ISO 14001 Certificate, THAI Catering Department has revealed our determination to improve the management and awareness of social responsibility. The management of an environment system, creates a safer work place including reducing the likelihood of accidents and emergencies. The certificate also exhibits a good image for the organization that helps lower the long term costs to the company.”
