Seagate Technology (Thailand) Ltd, the Thai Robotics Society (TRS) and Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering announce the opening of Robocup Thailand Championship 2008, inviting university students in Thailand to take part in one of the most challenging robotics contests in the world.
The Robocup Thailand Championship 2008 consists of two leagues: a Senior league whose winning team will join the World Robocup 2008 in Suzhou, China, and a Junior league which will provide opportunities for young students to demonstrate their abilities in robotics. Thai nationals studying for their bachelors’ degree or higher are eligible for the competition. Each team should consist of three students and an advisor.
The preliminary round will be held in mid-December at Kasetsart University’s Faculty of Engineering, while the final round will be held on January 12.
“We are very pleased that Seagate is supporting this competition for the sixth consecutive year,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, president of TRS. “Seagate is a major partner in developing the critical engineering and robotic skills of Thai students. The Robocup Thailand Championship is one of the most crucial factors in supporting the national roadmap of robotics and automation development to improve Thailand’s competitive position in these key areas.”
The technologies used in this competition will help prepare students for careers in today’s advanced automated manufacturing environments. Such contests also develop other key skills, such as teamwork, problem-solving and innovative thinking.
“Kasetsart University takes pride in cooperating with TRS and Seagate to host the 2008 Robocup Thailand Championship,” said Associate Professor Vudtechai Kapilakanchana, President, Kasetsart University. “The university has developed courses to drive the government’s vision in making Thailand the center of robotic engineering innovation of the future.”
This year, the contest features more opportunities for junior students to join a beginners’ league so they can start their robot team. Both games are similar in terms of rules and regulation. The differences are the number of robots that are used and the size of the fields.
“During the past five years, we have seen Thai students improve their performances in both local contest and in the international contest,” said Jeffrey D. Nygaard, Seagate VP and country manager for Thailand operations. “The Robocup Thailand Championship brings together students and technology in ways that positively impact their lives while encouraging the next generation of young innovators. Moreover, this contest helps students to develop vital skills for the the 21st century.”
