DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, today announced that DHL Thailand despatched more than 3.2 million express shipments with a combined weight in excess of 15 million kilos in 2005.
According to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the international air freight business slowed in 2005. Despite this and the fact that Thailand was affected by the Asian tsunami, outbreaks of bird flu and rising oil prices, DHL recorded growth in a number of markets.
Latest figures from DHL indicate that in 2005, Japan was the top destination for exports, driven by an increase of more than 70 percent in the value of non-durable goods, and a rise of over 25 percent in the value of industrial machinery and equipment. In total, DHL’s shipments to Japan grew by more than 8 percent. In terms of export growth, the Middle East exhibited faster growth than any other region, with a rise of more than 18 percent. This was primarily driven by the automotive industry which registered a rise of nearly 20 percent. Pan Asian trade remained strong, accounting for three of the top five countries receiving goods exported from Thailand.
Further information from DHL indicates that imports from China to Thailand rose by 73.6 percent. The rise in DHL’s shipments from China crossed all sectors, most significantly in wholesale trade in non-durable goods which rose by more than 300 percent, and transportation equipment which rose by more than 160 percent. Overall trade was strong throughout Asia, with four of the top five countries importing goods into Thailand coming from this region.
In terms of industries, DHL continued to record strong performance from the electronics industry with a 26 percent rise in imports and a nearly 15 percent increase in exports. In 2005, DHL’s fastest growing business sectors in Thailand were the import of non-durable goods (up almost 74 percent), transportation equipment (up nearly 47 percent) and chemicals and allied products (up 37 percent). On the export side, the fastest growth was recorded in chemicals and allied products (up 23 percent), non-durable goods (up almost 23 percent) and transportation service (up 15 percent).
In 2006, government agencies and academics are predicting further export growth in the food, automotive industries and electronics sectors, and this will have a knock-on effect for other industries, especially for those specializing in logistics and supply chain solutions.
Coupled with IATA’s prediction that freight levels will return to normal after a difficult time in 2005, DHL is confident that 2006 will be another successful year.
Herbert Vongpusanachai, Managing Director of DHL Express Thailand, said, “In 2005, despite the difficulties experienced in Thailand and in the international air-freight business, DHL Thailand has continued to experience strong double digit growth.”
He added, “I am confident that our strong business performance in Thailand will continue this year, as we look forward to continued growth in Thailand’s export market and the completion of our new hub at Suvarnabhumi Airport. In addition, from 2000 to 2006 and beyond in Asia Pacific, DHL has invested US$1.6 billion in infrastructure and staff facilities to constantly enhance our services, and provide our customers with the best-in-class international air express services.”
