Siemens HiPath healthcare solution HiMed: Better patient care and optimized workflow in hospital At CeBIT 2005, the Siemens Communications Group will introduce the latest version of its modular HiPath healthcare solution, HiMed. This solution allows medical personnel access to the clinical information system directly from the patient’s room. In addition, patients with HiMed have access to entertainment, information, and communications programs by means of a bedside monitor. HiPath HiMed provides the patient with an information terminal that integrates a nurse call button, telephone and lighting controls. It also includes a range of entertainment features such as a television, video player, internet, games and radio with personal messaging services. Additional functions support the patient’s self-management: He promptly receives important clinical and administrative information directly in his room and has access to a range of administrative information right down to the daily meal choices. In addition, he may research an information database for treatment methods and tips for improving his own health. For hospital personnel, HiMed acts as a gateway to all essential patient data directly from the patient’s bed. During patient consultations, current information such as diagnostic images or lab data can be retrieved and compared with earlier results on the spot. And it is assured throughout that only those authorized can retrieve sensitive patient data. Each authorized person receives a personalized Smartcard, without which access to protected information is prohibited. This guarantees strict adherence to legal guidelines regarding protection of privacy and access control. The technical concept behind the new HiMed solution combines a central processor with a display terminal for each patient. It is therefore no longer necessary to set up and maintain an entire multimedia PC workstation in every room. The need for time-consuming back-and-forth transfer of conventional PCs on a roll cart has also come to an end. Patients’ monitors are supported by a central media server with several gateways to LANs, medical information systems, communications services and broadcast media. HiPath HiMed is completely compatible with the real time IP systems from Siemens as well as with communications systems from external providers. The hospital’s existing cable infrastructures are used for installation. HiPath is the Enterprise Convergence Architecture from Siemens. A comprehensive solution and service portfolio enables companies to further expand their existing voice and data infrastructures, safeguard their existing capital investment, and implement second generation IP (2gIP) applications. 2gIP applications optimize company processes and lead to a sustained improvement in productivity for the corporation. Thanks to the continuous further development of its products and software, Siemens Communications is an innovation leader on the path to a seamless integration of realtime communication in the IT world. According to analysts, HiPath has ensured that Siemens is the world's number one supplier of VoIP connections. With a market share of 38.6%. Siemens aims to further expand this position. Over 70% of the Fortune 500 corporations have selected a HiPath solution. Customers include BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Bank, Ford, IBM, Kodak, SAP, BP and Volvo. Additional information about HiPath is available at: www.siemens.com/hipath Smart Home: Innovative applications for carriers – interesting services for the home As part of its “Smart Home” concept, the Siemens Communications Group is presenting interesting new applications for fixed network operators and service providers. Surpass Home Entertainment, Surpass Video Call Applications, Surpass Healthcare Services and Surpass Home Security are solutions that allow carriers to offer their customers innovative services at home that make everyday life easier, more comfortable or more entertaining. With scenarios like entertainment and video telecommunication over the television, a health check over the internet with a simultaneous video consultation by your doctor, or monitoring the security of your home from your den or from the road demonstrate to the trade show visitor how the world of tomorrow might look. The Smart Home concept comprises innovative products and solutions for the networked house that make your life more secure, more comfortable, more efficient and more entertaining. Together with partners and subsidiaries, Siemens presents a wide variety of solutions — from intelligent, communicating home appliances and controls for lighting and heating, to modern security, IT and telecommunication products and new media applications. “Surpass Video Call Applications” bundles various telecommunications applications. Video calls can be made over the TV set or conference calls held with multiple parties. An integrated message box stores video messages just like a traditional telephone answering machine. And a logical interface makes using these services easy. “Surpass Healthcare Services” make the doctor’s house call reality again. The special target group for this application is people who require regular monitoring of vital functions. These routine checks can now be performed remotely by letting the doctor operate measurement and control devices over the internet. An important factor for such an application is to create personal contact and personal support. The doctor or medical technician is linked to the homebound patient via video call and can give advice or discuss changes in the therapeutic regimen. For critical outpatients, constant monitoring of certain parameters like blood pressure, heart rhythm or blood sugar over the internet can be set up. When one of the values exceeds a certain limit, the system can automatically call the patient’s mobile phone or notify the medical facility taking care of the patient. “Surpass Home Security” is a solution with which users can monitor their home via a mobile phone. If something is wrong they can call for help or notify the police. The solution is based on cameras installed in the home and motion, fire and water sensors which trigger an SMS message to be sent to the owner’s mobile phone in case of trouble. The owner can then call home and check the video feed, record it if necessary, and notify the police or a security service. “Surpass Home Entertainment”, the entertainment solution via set-top box which was already introduced last year, completes the Smart Home portfolio. All these new applications are based on the softswitches, gateways and broadband technologies of the Surpass product family. They provide reliable and fast Ethernet-based telecommunication with high transmission rates over the Internet Protocol. They can be used with a TV set in combination with a set-top box, a PC, PDA or cordless display phone. Even a mobile phone with UMTS or GPRS support and an appropriate screen may work. To provide these applications over the IP network with the necessary quality and reliability, Siemens and Juniper Networks have jointly developed the RESIP (RESilient IP Networks) program. The companies already showed at last year’s CeBIT how convergent IP networks meeting the differing requirements of voice and data can be installed on the basis of their RESIP expertise, the RESIP design rules and with products from Juniper Networks and Siemens. By adding RESIP for video, they now even cover end-to-end triple-play scenarios with voice, video and data. With networks that are installed in accordance with the RESIP design rules, operators can provide new and reliable applications with the quality and variety consumers expect, even under very high network loads. Since the applications are cost-efficient and highly scalable, they can even be used on very large networks with up to 50 million multimedia subscribers. Siemens Communications is one of the largest players in the global telecommunications industry. Siemens is the only provider in the market that offers its customers a full-range portfolio, from devices for end users to complex network infrastructures for enterprises and carriers as well as related services. Siemens Communications is the world’s innovation leader in convergent technologies, products and services for wireless, fixed and enterprise networks. It is the largest Group within Siemens and operates in more than 160 countries around the world. In fiscal 2004 (year-end September 30), its 60,000-strong workforce posted sales of approximately 18 billion euros. More about Siemens Communications at http://www.siemens.com/communications End.
