‘ARRIVE’ UNMANNED INTELLIGENT VEHICLE TEAM OF MAE FAH LUANG UNIVERSITY WINS THAILAND INTELLIGENT VEHICLE CHALLENGE 2008

กรุงเทพฯ--13 มิ.ย.--Sir

“Arrive” unmanned intelligent vehicle team of Mae Fah Luang University wins the Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge and received a cash prize of 300,000 baht. This is the second time this event has been held in Thailand and is jointly organized by the Thai Robotics Society, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT)’s Department of Mechatronics, the Society of Automotive Engineers Thailand and Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited “PA-PA-YA” unmanned intelligent vehicle team, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), receives the cash prize of 200,000 baht for winning the first runner up award. “Darkhorse” unmanned intelligent vehicle team, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, is awarded 50,000 baht as the team with the excellent technique. “Real” unmanned intelligent vehicle team, Songkhla University, is awarded 50,000 baht as the team with the excellent creativity. “Plasma IV” unmanned intelligent vehicle team, Chulalongkorn University, is awarded 50,000 baht as the team with the excellent design. The unmanned intelligent vehicle is the combination of automation, automotive engineering, mechanics and computer programming. Contestants are required to design an unmanned intelligent vehicle that is able to move autonomously on a predefined road without a driver or remote control. Various intelligent technologies are employed on those unmanned intelligent vehicles to recognize the road from its surrounding. Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge 2008 has a two stage contest; preliminary in April and final round contests in June 2008. Sixteen teams from various universities in Thailand contested in the preliminary round contest. The judging committee selected 8 teams with the highest score for the final round contest. Those other 5 teams that did not qualify but also performed well were given the opportunity to take part in the final round contest as well based on the unanimous agreement by the judging committee. Seagate EE25.2 Series hard drives with storage capacity of 60GB each, have been used for storing data on the movement of the vehicle and other important data during the contest which has to be submitted to the judging committee. This year’s final round contest rules are more difficult and challenging than last year’s. In the final round of Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge 2008, each team has to run on a different track which will be given shortly prior the competition. Each vehicle has to comply with 7 types of traffic signs and has to avoid 3 obstacles. All the signs and obstacles are installed randomly on the track. The winner will be decided based on the longest distance covered by the vehicle on the track and also on the team that complies most to the rules of the competition. Assistant Professor Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, president of the Thai Robotics Society said, “Three major objectives of Thailand Intelligent Vehicle are firstly to develop creativity and expertise in robotic technology, automatic system and automobile industry, secondly to encourage the support of the extra curriculum activity and thirdly to prepare researchers from various universities in Thailand to take part in intelligent vehicle development project.” Mr. Jeffrey D. Nygaard, vice president and country manager, Thailand Operations, Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited said, This is the second year of Seagate to sponsor “Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge” which is one of the most challenging contests of the year. It is a great honor for Seagate to support this competition. This event provides tremendous benefits to Thai students in adopting their theoretical knowledge into practice and developing robotic car by using the combined skills of mechanics, electronics, computer programming, and automotive engineering. “This competition also helps developing Thai students’ capabilities in science and technology. By supporting resources to build the knowledge-based society, this competition will also enhance the long-term competitiveness of Thailand.” Associate Professor Dr. Manukid Parnichkun, chairman of organizing committee of Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge and the academic of Mechatronics department, School of Engineering and Technology, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) said, “Thailand Intelligent Vehicle Challenge is unmanned cars competition organized for the second time in Thailand this year. Thailand is among very few countries which have potential to organize this kind of competition since it requires high technology knowledge in robotics and automotive fields of the competitors and also big budget for making an intelligent vehicle. I hope this event would stimulate Thailand to be among the world first countries which have potential to develop unmanned cars for real usage. I believe the students who participate in this competition would make my dream come true.” About Thai Robotics Society Thai Robotics Society (TRS) was established in 2000 by groups of roboticians, researchers, and industrial people, involving in robotic education and application.
