Gigabit switch that is smarter, more secure and more cost-effective
Allied Telesyn, the global end-to-end networking solutions vendor, today announced the availability of the AT-9408LC/SP L2 Fiber Gigabit managed switch, which is ideal for traditional enterprise LANs, defence industries and financial institutions that require Gigabit, advanced security and fiber connection for fiber-to-the-desktop networks. The AT-9408LC/SP comes with a compact flash card slot which is used to store logs, update firmware or patch, store configuration files and to support script files.
More intelligent than simple Layer 2 switches, the cost-effective AT-9408LC/SP offers advanced attack detection and suppression capabilities for increased security and advanced Quality of Service (QoS) to support converged applications. QoS refers to the ability to intelligently manage network traffic to allow stable and predictable end-to-end network performance. With QoS, it will aid network administrators in managing network congestion as network traffic levels increase and time-critical applications such as streaming media become more widely in demand by customers and organisations.
The AT-9408LC/SP is an advanced Layer 2 managed Gigabit switch for the access edge that brings enhanced security to Gigabit networks. Many network administrators demand easy to manage, cost effective, intelligent switches at the LAN edge and the AT-9408LC/SP switch answers such demands, with the optimal balance of features, performance and value.
“The AT-9400 Series packs a lot of features in one rack unit. With advanced AlliedWareTM technology, the AT-9400 switches allow network administrators to configure the switch to examine packet formats and content from Layer 2, Layer 3, or Layer 4 (also known as the MAC, IP and TCP/UDP layers). After these layer parameters are defined and detected, the switch can trigger network decisions such as Access Control Lists (ACLs) for protection against DoS attacks, establishing rate limits for excessive bandwidth usage and altering QoS to support converged applications,” said Jason Phoon, Senior Manager for Product Marketing with Allied Telesyn.
To address the heightened concern of network attacks in the form of Denial of Services (DoS), Allied Telesyn now makes security features its primary focus. A DoS attack is a network infrastructure attack that can cripple the network by flooding it with useless traffic and is targeted towards critical network equipment such as routers, switches and the firewall.
Assisted by the L2-L4 intelligence, network administrators can deploy the AT-9408LC/SP to complement WAN firewalls and PC anti-virus protections to fortify the network against malicious attacks. The AT-9408LC/SP come pre-programmed to detect six well-known DoS attacks and more attack protection can be defined by adding additional profiles to the access control list. Benefits of DoS attack protection includes maximum network uptime by suppression of DoS traffic and decreased IT support costs due to reduced costs from compromises from worm/virus attacks.

The security policy of AT-9408LC/SP protects the integrity of network and data as well as ensuring network uptime for productivity. Coupled with security features such as 802.1x (Port-based Network Access Control) and Radius/TACACS+, the AT-9408LC/SP provides Tiered Security on each port. Deploying Tiered Security in unsecured areas such as visitors’ meeting rooms and lounges provide cost-effective protection at the network layer. For example, with 802.1x, network administrators will be able to limit access to who can and cannot enter the network while the Radius/TACACS+ provides user level authentication and accounting function.
Network administrators can configure the AT-9408LC/SP to control bandwidth-wasting traffic, such as music streaming to desktops by dynamically lowering the priority and limiting bandwidth to a trickle. Such features benefit metropolitan providers by enabling them to charge a fee to provision different bandwidth and QoS priorities as value-added services for customers.
The Allied Telesyn AT-9408LC/SP is available now at all Allied Telesyn’s distributors and resellers (www.alliedtelesyn.sg/en-sg/corpinfo/reseller.asp)
