ALLIED TELESYN LAUNCHES FIRST MULTI-PROTOCOL MANAGED MODULAR MEDIA CONVERTER
High Density and Small Footprint Makes Converteon Ideal for Deployment in FTTx Applications
Allied Telesyn, the global IP networking solutions leader, today announced the launch of Converteon, an innovative, protocol-independent, managed media converter system designed to facilitate the transport of telecom traffic such as E1/T1, serial RS232 communications, and traditional Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet from a single unified platform. Service providers and large businesses with wide-reaching corporate networks can now terminate multiple transport services at a single point, thus reducing management overhead, operating and capital expenditure investment. Building on its well-known leadership in the media converter arena, Allied Telesyn draws on its 18 years of experience to bring this revolutionary media conversion solution to the market.
The initial release of the Converteon series will have 2 types of chassis and a bridging conversion line card with IEEE 802.3ah OAM features. Further platforms are planned, and will be released later in 2005.
Model Description
AT-CV1000 Single slot chassis powered by an external wall-mountable power adapter or power supply unit for use in standalone applications. For use in remote locations and can be populated with a single line card.
AT-CV5000 18 slot chassis, powered by an AC or DC power supply, with the option for a redundant power supply. For deployment at the centre of a star topology network, where it connects over fiber to other Converteon devices. Ideal for deployment in FTTH applications at the Point-of-Presence (POP). The 2RU chassis is the highest port density multi-protocol chassis available on the market today.

AT-CV5M01 This control module card is hot-swappable and can be inserted in any line card slot in the AT-CV5000 chassis without powering OFF.
The AT-CV5M01 Control Process Module is the CPU subsystem used with the Allied Telesyn Converteon Series chassis AT-CV5000, that provides management capability to configure and determine the status of the media converter line cards. The Converteon series chassis (AT-CV1000 and AT-CV5000) share common line cards for easier inventory management and smoother product deployment.
These modular, chassis-based units use carrier class 802.3ah OAM (Operations, Administration and Maintenance) management to interconnect LAN devices over wider distances. The features of Remote Loopback and MIB Retrieval make remote troubleshooting and management from a central office easier, with minimal management overhead and also allow broad reach across different geographical areas. Remote loopback is useful as a diagnostic tool, as it can be used to isolate problem segments in a large network. MIB variable Retrieval and Extensions, calculates throughputs, error rates and utilization factors. Supporting 802.3ah provides much needed management services presently available on existing WAN technologies to Ethernet services, allowing operators to greatly reduce operating expenditure associated with non-manageable services, whilst benefiting from the lower cost of Ethernet.
“The CV5000 Converteon platform has been designed with service providers in mind but can also be useful for large businesses,” said Jason Phoon, Allied Telesyn’s Senior Manager for Product Marketing in Asia Pacific. “The chassis is designed to support an internal switching matrix module which will allow multiple blades on the chassis to be aggregated using Layer 3 switching functionality.”
The Converteon has fully hot-swappable redundancy options including dual redundant power supplies (both AC and DC), field-replaceable fan units, media and management modules. Enterprise customers, looking to deploy lower cost networks with lower availability demands, can populate single power supplies and management cards.
A wide range of Converteon media blades allows connectivity of copper Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet over either multi-mode and single-mode fiber optic cables at distances of up to 80km. These are available with and without IEEE 802.3ah support, providing connectivity for both service provider and enterprise customers. Non Ethernet-only blades include E1/T1 connectivity, which allows service providers to upgrade an existing E1/T1 fiber circuit, by deploying a Converteon chassis at either end of the fiber link. The link will then be able to carry both the existing E1/T1 channel, and an additional 100BaseTx connection, which could provide a high-speed broadband or inter-office connection for the end users, and a new revenue stream for the service provider. The E1/T1 card also supports 802.3ah remote management.
For Enterprise customers still using legacy RS232 type based serial communication devices, Converteon provides the ability to transparently transport RS232 type traffic over a fiber optic pair.
