ALLIED TELESYN IS TEACHER’S PET AT SOUTH BIRMINGHAM COLLEGE
Networking Giant Saves College Time And Money By Providing Reliable, Predictable And Manageable Network Solution
Allied Telesyn, a global provider of end-to-end Ethernet/IP solutions, today announced the successful network deployment for South Birmingham College, one of the most successful colleges of higher education in the Midlands of the United Kingdom. With the installation that relies on Allied Telesyn’s Switchblade and AT-8700 series multi-layer switches, South Birmingham College became a satisfied customer of Allied Telesyn.
Having over 1,000 PCs across six sites, South Birmingham College needed a reliable and intelligent network that could handle the demand placed on it by the 30,000+ students that use it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When its Digbeth campus was being designed with media, design and IT courses in mind, the IT department realised that it would need an easy-to-manage solution, due to the increase in use of media applications.
For Alan Benson, Assistant Director of Learning Resources and Technical Services for South Birmingham College, the scale of the installation meant that ease of setup and maintenance was the main priority: “We needed a network that could provide a high level of service to our students, as it is our mission to provide high-quality education and training. We also wanted all applications to be controlled at a central point to save time and money.”
Allied Telesyn’s education network solution harnesses the power of end-to-end Layer 3 intelligence with value-added features like time-based (weekday, weekend, day, date, time) and/or event-based triggers that command the switch to run a pre-defined set of actions. In addition, the email alerting function built into Allied Telesyn’s Layer 3 switches, sends out pre-determined notification alerts about the network. These allow the IT department to have better control of the network.
The Switchblade range of Layer 3-7 modular and highly resilient chassis switches offer customers a robust network core element that can keep pace with applications and technology rapidly evolving towards convergent services, security, load balancing and multimedia applications with conformance to IPv6 and emerging 10 Gigabit standards.
The AT-8700 switches include traffic management with independent bandwidth control that allows students at the Digbeth campus to run media graphics, work on animation projects and edit video. The switches also include an unmatched set of tools to enable easy management through a user-friendly interface.
“Due to the management features, it now only takes three members of staff to look after the IT network balance requirements across the whole college,” added Alan Benson. “As we now operate through just one interface, there is only a small amount of training required by our staff. The network is now reliable, predictable and manageable – we can now deploy our staff more effectively to support our students and that means we can make better use of our resources to improve teaching and learning.”
The solution provided a robust, secure and intelligent network infrastructure that resulted in an immediate improvement to network services by increasing the sustainable bandwidth at all of the sites. When the Digbeth campus was opened, the college installed 400 PCs in three days, which demonstrates the speed and reliability of the Allied Telesyn system.
“Not only has Allied Telesyn enabled us to provide a better service to all our students, it has also saved us time and money” concluded Alan Benson.
Allied Telesyn is currently being deployed in several other education networks in the Asia Pacific region. “We are drawing on our global expertise in providing reliable, feature-rich networks for educational institutes and welcome the opportunity to share this expertise in the region,” said Anthony Hill, Managing Director Allied Telesyn Asia Pacific.
